What size plate do I need to fit inbetween the filter and block so I can run oil temperature gauge off it?

I don't think it matters too much as long as you don't have a 185 (I may be wrong but isn't there a space/width limitation?).

Just look for a plate that has a 3/4UNF thread adapter/thread on it and it should be fine. :)

ST205 oil filter is in a different place, on the ST185 there probably inst room for a sandwich plate between the filter and the oil cooler donut.

I would look at measuring the oil temp in the sump.

Yep, sump oil temp is the best overall location. If that's awkward then you could always take a T piece off the oil pressure sensor in the head assuming its the same as an ST205?

My oil pressure sensor comes off the top right hand of the block, I don't know if thats the same as 205.

To go via the sump, is there a special bolt that acts as plug and sensor adaptor, or do you have to drill new hole and fit sensor that way?

I can't really remember the st185 sump too much. Ideally you'd have a hole cut and a nut welded on which you would other screw the sensor into.

You can also use the sump plug hole if you can make the sensor fit, you need to make sure the wire doesn't get twisted up when tightening or untightening the sensor to change the oil.

That's the awkward bit I was referring to

I don't remember a lack of height problem on the 185 oil filter, just that it was next to the downpipe and therefore suffered extra oil heating. I'll have another look next time I see a 185 engine complete.

Drilling a hole in the sump and welding on a nut requires sump removal, both to get rid of swarf and to avoid an oil fire.

I'm sure it's possible to drill & tap a hole in a sump plug - there may even be something available. The 2 downsides are that the back of the sensor may stick down a bit and take a battering, plus sump plug removal will be a pain with wires hanging off (a plug will avoid wire twisting problem).

Ok thanks for advice. I'll have a look into it.

Can even get an oil filter relocation kit and they have pre drilled holes for sensors.
Now oil filter is away from heat source - downpipe, and you can fit your required oil sensors too.
