Been noticing recently and I dont know if this is because its been dark when I've looked, but after I've been driving reasonably hard but with a good 2-3 mile gentle 'cool down off boost' drive after, that my exhaust/turbo manifold is glowing when I turn off.

I've checked afr and its perfect but I have been told that a egt gauge would be beneficial as its very important.

Is it supposed to glow- and I mean quite a glow....??

Or is this telling me my egt's are far too high.

If so anyone got a good place to get gauge and sensor or are the 30-50 quid ones off ebay suitable?

EGT is a really good thing to measure but I wouldn't be overly concerned by a glowing manifold or turbo, I have seen mine a brilliant red colour after sessions on track.

To be of huge benefit, you really need to put the sensor pre-turbo and ideally one per cylinder in each runner. Any drilling prior to the turbo will, of course, require removal of turbo and manifold.
I know some people do stick a sensor in the downpipe but it will have lost a fair bit of heat through the turbo so readings will be different.

Cheap sensors.

Steve gave me a link to some cheap meters (about £5) but I can't find a link now. They look very much like these.

Have a look at this thread for ideas on fitting.

Thanks chris. So looking at your manifold, you've drilled holes then threaded sensors into each port, then do you wire it into the temp gauge and how does temp gauge know each port temp??

1 gauge per sensor, or fit a switch to select.

Having 1 per cylinder shows up if you have a problem with weak mixture in a single cylinder, e.g. injector problem. For a single sensor, it is common to fit in runner 3 as this tends to be the hottest if there are no faults elsewhere.

Yes looks like a good idea. How do you stop gases leaking from the sensor holes?

I had a threaded hole and used some exhaust paste to stop it leaking.

You could probably use silicon as well.

The thread should be a fairly tight fit. Rust & soot should do the rest.
Silicon won't stand manifold temperatures.

Good to know about the silicon.

When I removed my EGT gauge it was really sooty and rusty on the thread as well.

Just noticed that tbe digi temp gauge only records up to 750°c. Is that not to low as most egt gauges read around 1000+?

The Auber gauges still look reasonable value but it seems like they have cottoned on to the auto market and upped their prices a bit

Those Auber gauges look intriguing. Reading through the specs it seems they have covered all the bases with regards to alarms and external relays and are pretty reasonably priced.

I've been looking at possible replacements for my dash display and an array of these might be what I am looking for, especially as they are DIN sized.

I might pick up one to see what they are like then order the others if any good.

Looking at the 22x45mm dimensions you could get at least six of these in a standard 50x180mm DIN panel or possibly eight at a squeeze!
