I am after some advice for which type of in tank fuel pump I should go for. I do have a walboro in tank pump but I have heard that they are irritating and noisy....is this true?

I have also been advised that the Supra pump is a good modification.

Does anyone have any advice on what to go for?

Walbro is good. Relativley priced and has a slight hum/buzz but not loud.
Unless your rear seats are stripped out, you can barely hear a 255lph.

I haven't heard a supra pump so cannot comment on differences.

Everything is stripped out at the moment :D but some nice sound deadening material will be added.

I want a nice sound system though so I dont really want any "extra" exterior noise detracting from the listening experience.

I find the car very noises with the seats out anyway, you can hear the diff and all sorts of stuff going on. I would not have thought that it would be an issue.

I'm using the walboro pump in my car although its not been running yet. I am going for a nice comfortable fast road car. I'll let you know in February if its unbearable!

I can't say I even notice mine but I do have rear seats and a Blitz exhaust so it's not exactly a Jaguar when it comes to interior NVH

Well I decided to throw caution to the wind and fitted the walbro. During the process of fitting I came to a conclusion as to why I think people have noisy pumps.

When I have seen pictures in the past from people who have fitted the walbro pump they have cir clipped the pump to the arm that it sits on.....I think this transmits the vibration from the pump to the tank and increases the noise level.

If the pump is fitted as per the instructions it is held in place by the rubber plate on the bottom and the pipe so it does not need holding in place by anything else...this keeps it remote from any metal parts reducing vibration.

My only other question/concern is, I need to solder the new pump wires to the old pump wires, I hope this is safe to do within a tank environment? I am also going to shrink wrap over the soldered joint....will the shrink wrap be OK in petrol?

I have yet to find shrink wrap that makes any mention of Petrol, so it's an unknown. I would use a piece of petrol resistant hose and arrange for it to be longer than the distance of solder joint to pump top. Slide it on the upper wire, solder up, and let gravity hold it down over the joint. If you really want, use stainless cable ties round it. I wouldn't trust normal plastic ones in petrol.

I'm sure I recall reading recently that you need a particular type of shrink wrap that is impervious to petrol/oil. Worth checking before you install as it would be a right PITA to fix later.

I will do a test with some regular shrink wrap, see what happens when I leave it in fuel for a week or so.

The worry isn't whether you will need to do it again in the future, it's how you'll find out you need to do it. The only symptom of insulation failure is when the power feed touches the metal bracket. If you're very very lucky, this will only blow a fuse and you'll need to get the car recovered back home. More likely is that you won't even know you've had a problem, we will when we read the obitury.

It is a worry, I am thinking about adding some silicone vacuum hose around the wire. I have cut the wires at different lengths so if the shielding does fail then they wont arc against each other.

Normal silicon hose degrades in contact with hydrocarbons, fuel hose is the only material which I would be confident of using. I'm pretty sure this is also what my engine builder recommended.
