heat would suggest an excessive current flowing through it. Is that cable in good condition, what are the connections like??

Which wire is getting hot ? The one from battery direct to engine ?

Is the whole wire getting hot, or just the connection end ?

Poor connections drop voltage and therefore get hot.

It's a earth in the engine not to the battery

Which one though. The small one by the alternator or the main braid?

If it's the small one then chances are you have lost the main connection which runs from the battery to the gearbox

It comes off the starter was the original one to the battery but had the battery converted to the boot

I picture with annotations would help.

Was the battery relocation done with the correct gauge cables?

If the battery earths to body in the boot then the heavy wire from starter that used to go to battery needs to go direct to a good body earth. The old thinner cable from battery to body isn't man enough for starter current.
