Sounds like big end.

It's not uncommon with these engines as they get worn that you get big end knock for a couple of seconds on engine start before the oil pressure gets up. If you act fairly quickly, a new set of bearing shells may solve the problem. This can be done without removing the engine.

If you have big end knock after a fw seconds when the oil pressure is there, then probably too late.

Thanks, Yes I'm think its best to strip the sump off when i can now and do the bearings incase it gets worse.

I re-built the engine in my AE86 before and it had coding on the block to tell me what size bearings i needed, is it the same for the 3SGTE?? or does standard size do all

It has coding. Seems to be a Toyota thing.

Probably worth taking the sump off for an inspection & measure and note the sizes needed, then take the sump off again to fit.

If you do main bearings, you will need to release the tension on the cam belt to get the block half of the No.1 bearing in/out.
