Does anyone know what plastic the Bumper covers are made from? I tried using polyethylene welding rods but they just dont stick at all, the bumper plastic disintegrates from the heat of the heat gun before the plastic welds together....is the bumper plastic even weldable??? I am having real trouble bonding the bumpers together, I was going to use fibreglass but it looks like it wont stick for long before it delaminates.

The proper bumper repair epoxy I am using does not like being used in large areas.

Any ideas how i should go about bonding the bumpers together?

Hmm, I must admit I would have thought the bumpers were polyethylene but your test seems to have ruled that out. Maybe its some type of thermoplastic? Knowing Toyota the material is probably the result of gazillions of yen spent on research and development. In millions of years time some archaeologist will unearth a perfectly preserved GT-Four and wonder if it was the peak of automotive evolution or a dead-end

I have had a couple of PMs over on the celica club from bumper repair people, both stated that the bumper material is too rubbery and can't be welded. Bugger. What I thought was going to be a simple task has turned into a nightmare.

It burns, well, it disintergrates into a powder, I have tried hot air and a soldering iron, niether work.

Have you thought about using a glue? Or possibly mechanically fixing then filling and spraying?

wolfiehere replied to one of your earlier posts saying he has a plastic weld kit that he uses on his bumpers...why not just let him do it?

or

have you quizzed malpasso as to how he did his?

:)

I know, but it costs me £50+ in diesel to get to Warners & I like to be able to do stuff myself before I let somone else do it. I am not sure the plastic that Toyota uses is weldable as it doesnt appear to be normal ABS or Polythelyne. I will be doing some more investigating tonight, I might just resort to 3M bumper epoxy.

I sent martin an E-mail this morning to ask him.

Did you talk to your local bodyshop/auto repair center? I'm sure they can tell you what method to use.

Otherwise: rivets. Blends in with the rally theme you're following as well :)

Fusor might make an epoxy that could work for you. I used one of their products when cutting up a lip from another car to create a lip for my gtfour. The one I used though would not be strong enough for the job you are doing, but you might find something in their product line that is.

I am currently trying 2 products, one from Maplins.

http://www.maplin.co.uk/plastic-weld-46010

Which is very good, but does take over night to dry, after a couple of days it bonds to the plastic very well, but doesn't like being used in the cold. Smells a lot too.

The other stuff I am using has been recommended to me the local 3m dealer, although not a 3m product. It's a one minute plastic epoxy that as the title says, sets in one minute. It doesn't, it sets almost immediately, is very difficult to do anything with because if this, but when it sets it is a very passable plastic replacement and very strong. It's also expensive at £13 for a small tube.

Power tec do a plastic stapling kit 'expensove for a one time use' the plastic is rubbery but there are ways of plasti welding it as it is not a thermoplastic. So just a case of finding the correct methods and correct plastic rods thou i must add that what you are trying to do it will need more reinforcement than just plastic welding as the weight of the bottom lip will be too heavy for just molten plastic to cope with

I am bonding it with a wire mesh?
