I have heard arguments for an against both of the systems from various different sources, and thought it would be useful to compile a thread of peoples thoughts of the positive and negative points of each system for everyone to discuss.

I would be particularly interested in hearing from those who have had both systems. What are you thoughts, is it a worthwhile conversion and why?

for road use I would say the SS is best

other than reliabillity and price i cant think of many reasons to change to a 202 setup

Louis - For what reason? I am thinking more in terms of track use but all info/opinions are of interest.

There are definite weight benefits of the McPherson system, I have seen people stating 30kg or so which is substantial when its on the front end. Obviously the weight saving is great but if the system has detrimental effects on handling then its probably not worth while. I would be interested to know the change to handling characteristics from those who have tried it.

there’s not that many people running the McPherson set up, I know that used it on the rally car's but think that's is down to the fact that can take more of a beating then the SS and easier to change, you seen the post on the oc about it all?

The obvious switching to McPherson setup means you have more of a selection of suspension (i.e. shocks and springs).

not rely there are plenty of kits for the SS set now, my mare Tim makes then to spec bolt on and away you go

All things being equal super strut will outperform McPherson. You only have to look at a Mercedes making a turn with both wheels nearly parallel to the ground to see the effect (exaggerated) super strut cures

That said for a full blown hardcore track car I'd probably make the swap just for the availability of suspension struts. The likes of Reiger, AST and other genuine professional gear will be available. It's also easier to correct roll centres etc with a McPherson setup

It will be expensive though - hubs, brakes, struts etc
As a one off super strut replacement will be cheaper. As a long term the McPherson conversion will save you some bucks

If I remember right Paul B did the conversion using Audi TT kit - don't recall if it was just the platforms or the complete platform/hub/brake assembley

I'd support Steve's comments above. With my track toy project it was worth changing from SS to McPherson for the weight saving and the predictability of a McPherson setup. We have Ohlins dampers set up on a fully adjustable spring platform plus top mounts and a conventional straight anti-roll bar. This should make it very easy to adjust and relate cause and effect when tuning the suspension. With SS it would be more difficult to troubleshoot handling issues.

On my fast road/occasional track day ST205 I have KYB 4-point adjustable dampers shortly to be replaced with TEIN SuperStreet coilovers and EDFC. I don't think there is any point in changing to McPherson struts on a road car. There are enough SS options available now to suit most tastes
