Following recent discussions, the picture below shows the return path for oil from the front cam bearing.

Also, there is no chamfer on the holes for the dowel pegs on the front bearing cap or head, so no path along the channel in question. I would hazzard a guess it's there as an escape for excess sealant in the same way as those on the sump pan.

edit - having just done the oil pump on the MR2 engine, there is a similar channel round the pressurised parts returning back to the intake. I suspect it forms a double seal in that any seepage under pressure will escape at the channel leaving a second seal to the outside world that will not be under pressure.

Chris - thank you very much for this!

Correct me if I am wrong, but basically - I don't need to take the car apart?

Correct.

For future reference it is probably better to keep sealant away from the channel as it reduces the liklehood of leaks as above - it means the last part of the joint to the outside world has very little pressure across it. I notice they also have a similar channel on the sump / oil pump between the high pressure ports down to the filter and the 'gasket' area.

Out of interest, I've never put sealant on the front journals and never had a leak from them so I guess the theory works.

After Friday night's discussion I closely examined the cam and the bearing caps. The doweled bearing cap is cross drilled into the stud orifices. Combined with the other 'pressure relief holes' I get the impression that Toyota went to considerable lengths to protect the cam seal by venting pressure wherever possible into the top of the cylinder.

I simply put a very thin smear on the mating face of the cap, its so slight that you can hardly tell theres any on it, the face fit will seal it but ~I use the sealant just incase of any face discrepancies, the channels ive always suspected as somewhere for the oil to run back from the seal

Whos told you that you need to take it back apart mike ? Worse case scenario is an oil leak from cam seal ive seen some seriously splodged with sealant in the past dont worry about it mike

Hi Martin,

No one said to take it back apart, that's just what I was expecting we would have to do before Chris had looked at a head for me. It was just discussions over a curry on Friday night.

I will leave well alone. :)

Cheers.
