Post subject:  st205 blown dipstick

Hi Im waiting for my registration to go thru so im using teds account, I have just bought my import st205 and driven it back from leeds all fine. ( thursday ). Today i was on boost and saw a puff of smoke then had a splattering of oil on the windscreen. Pulled over and noticed the dipstick had lifted. refitted and drove home. Its got a front mount intercooler with various blanked off breather pipes ( i think ) its got some sort of oil catch can on it. Any one have any ideas as to why it could of happened? the pervious owne rprior to the one i got it off was a gordon smith from scotland.. Dont suppose anyone knows of him..

cheers in advance
Gavin

The oil couldn't of came from an aftermarket dump valve could it because that could be a sign of turbo seal issues.

If the dipstick has lifted and the oil has came from there then the blocks getting pressurised, maybe piston rings. A dodgy bit of plumbing for the PCV could potentially cause it too mind

I'm sure someone more clued up than I will b better placed than I however :)

This is frequently a sign of ringland failure. Has it started sounding a bit like a Subaru as well?

I would get a leakdown test done on the engine to see.

as above, is the car silver with i believe a evo core?

if so i think he rebuilt the block but to what spec or parts or who did the work I do not know

Lifted dipstick and oil splats on windscreen are not a good sign. Old or forged engines can have enough blowby to lift a dipstick, especially if breathers are blocked however you wouldn't normally get oil splashes. Assuming It's not turbo seals blowing out of the.dump valve it does sound like ringlands.

hi all, thanks for the advice. It is a silver one that has had piston rings done on it. it does sound a bit like a subaru. im pressure testing it tomorrow, and will check all the breathers as well. i need to try and work out this catcher can as well as it seems to tick for a few seconds after start up. im not sure its been plumbed in correctly.

many thanks

Gavin

Soon to be chippygt4 hopefully

PS the oil definitely came from the dip stick. not a great deal but a mist. Im also geting a bit of pressure from the oil filler cap.not enough to lift oil but a bit in time with ignition.
I will upload a pic of the engine bay and plumbing when my account is activated for comments and suggestions ..
Im going to have to change the head gasket so can i just put a metal one on or do i need to change anything else to go with it?

For a metal head gasket you need to make sure the mating faces are spotless and flat, much more critical than a cardboard one. Usually best to do a clean up skim on the head, and if the block is out to replace pistons then it may not hurt to give that a light skim too.

does anyone know if gorden smith still posts anywhere? i would be interested to see if he can recall what he did to the car.

Don't know the guy but I would strongly recommend you stay off-boost as much as possible until you've fixed the problem. If there's ring blow-by then the oil mist in the combustion chamber can encourage detonation, not a desirable state of affairs as that can lead to broken ringlands or worse.

Bit of an update. Ted found the original sellers advert via the gt4oc. Looks like the bloke i bought it from has sold it to me knowing there was engine issues. http://www.gt4oc.net/forums/viewtopic.p ... 7#p1340647 the like was the original post. looks like i best keep my st202 for a while.

Ringland failure almost certainly, may be a result of bores just being too worn or could be that the cause of the original piston failure was never diagnosed and corrected. I see it has an HKS ECU so it's possible it's set too weak or too advanced.

Assuming you're not the guy who bought it on pistonheads, it would seem he knew about it when he bought it, never mind sold it. I'd guess he bought it thinking it may be a cheap fix then got rid quick when he found it wasn't.

yeah think your right he seems to of put a catch can on which im certain is not plumbed right and is bone dry, ripped head off today and we discovered is fitted with steel gasket that im sure is weeping prob due to not having skimmed head as to who did this we are not sure as gord who did rebuild in 2010 and sold car to last owner said he fitted standard gasket, have found a burned out valve in no 2 also valve stems seem to be wet of oil havent removed pistons as yet as all seems good and bores look perfect.

You normally get some visible scoring with ringland failure so you may be lucky and find compression loss is down to valve and oil out of dipstick is down to breather blocked.
