Hi, (me again....)
Speaking to Chris (nibbles) about my rebuild and he mentioned about possibly installing some NA 3sge cams for some extra power (cheap).
Temped, so did some research on the pros and cos....
I'm struggling to find definitive answers.
More power less torque visa versa etc.
All I can figure out is that idle will be slightly lumpier.
So, what are the facts and figures/theory?

What will the torque be like at the bottom end compared to stock etc....

This is for a stock setup with stock ecu with no vernier pulleys (that will just confuse me even more...)

Thanks.

It will hold power to the red line a bit better. IIRC GE cams are somewhere around 256 so you won't gain huge power but you won't lose much torque. Worth it if you can get them cheap

Idle should be fine. Which reminds me, not sure if Mike ever sorted his rough idle

"but you won't lose much torque" where from?
I'd rather have more torque at low revs that higher bhp at higher revs (does that make sense?)

or to be more precise, I would rather have more "noticeable torque" at low end..
but If I get more noticeably higher BHP at top end with no "noticeable loss in low down torque" I'd be happy with that too. ;)

think its only the exhaust cam thats worth swapping, some people swap them into the N/a rev 2 for better torque and they do get a rough idle

as for fitting them in a rev 3 3sgte i have never come accross that and you could probably get better cams for the st205 easier but maybe a little more expensive

to give you an idea on cost a rev 3 3sge is only worth about £150 tops (because there are more engines than cars, it really was a toyota work of art) :D

good thread here:-

3sge cam specs:-
I suggested to a few guys abroad about looking at the 3S-GE cam specs compared to teh 3S-GTE. Some good info they have found and passed back to me :-)

2. gen 3SGE (165ps):

In: 244deg, 8.5mm lift (timing 7/57)

Ex: 244deg, 8.5mm lift (timing 57/7)

2. gen 3SGTE (225ps):

In: 236deg, 8.2mm lift (timing 8/48)

Ex: 236deg, 8.2mm lift (timing 56/0)

3. gen 3SGE A/T (170ps):

In: 240deg, 8.7mm lift (timing 7/53)

Ex: 240deg, 8.2mm lift (timing 53/7)

3.gen 3SGE M/T (180ps):

In: 252deg, 9.8mm lift (timing 7/65)

Ex: 240deg, 8.2mm lift (timing 53/7)

3.gen 3SGTE (245ps):

In: 240deg, 8.7mm lift (timing 7/53)

Ex: 236deg, 8.2mm lift (timing 50/6)

I am not sure if the 3rd gen 3S-GE 9.8mm lift can be accomodated in a 3S-GTE head without work?

For the gen 2 3s-GTE I am using a bit of a mix & match when my head comes off as the standard cams are pants.

They are cheap to buy but difficult to get someone to remove from a working head so you pay for buggeration more than the cams value.

For £50 or so they are well worth considering as a budget option but ideally need verniers to get them suited to a 3s-GTE IMHO. IIRC there is a small amount of adjustment as standard.

would it not just turn it into an interference engine with the higher lift? (8.2mm -> 9.8mm)
maybe valve spring might bottom out?

Thing is , I might be able to pull apart a gen 3 3sge head from a scrap yard car..

edit:- is 9.8mm for gen 3 3sge correct???

3.gen 3SGE M/T (180ps):

In: 252deg, 9.8mm lift (timing 7/65)

Ex: 240deg, 8.2mm lift (timing 53/7)

3.gen 3SGTE (245ps):

In: 240deg, 8.7mm lift (timing 7/53)

Ex: 236deg, 8.2mm lift (timing 50/6)

I have a spare 3SGTE rev 3 head with no cams in it so am free to choose what to put in without going overboard on price.
So, is it good idea to do the swap over? Remember, I don't want to loose bottom end.
