can i graft a sensor from an st202 onto the loom of a 205 and it work? ive already done it but it throws a code 42 every so often, im taking it back out to check the joints.

its all back together again. took it for a drive and no eml. however the abs light did come on again. front left again. could the abs ring be a fault? how can i check without taking it all apart ? or is it a case of take it apart and change it anyway?

An ABS sensor shouldn't affect the engine ECU. The 2 systems are separate.


The only faults likely on the ABS ring are missing or damaged teeth.
The sensor could be mechanically (too short = too big gap to ring) or electrically incompatible. I can't answer that one unfortunately.

i think they are incompatible as its now throwing a code 32 = Problem in left front wheel speed sensor circuit and 35 = Open in left front or right rear wheel speed sensor (WSS) circuit , its a nightmare trying to find one for a 205. tried everywhere.

I presume you've tried TCB ?

yeah tried tcb. only got new but i didnt want to go that route incase its not the sensor.

Does the error light come on before driving or after you start moving (after a reset if needed) ?

If it's reporting 'sensor open' it could be measuring an 'open circuit' which is something you can test with a meter, and could be sensor or wiring. (I believe the sensor is a magnetic type using a coil & magnetic field to provide a pulse each time a tooth goes by)

If the fault is only detected after moving, it's likely the fault is just a lack of pulses from the sensor which could be wiring, sensor, abs ring. If it's flagged immediately then it's probably electrical only and continuity tests should find the fault.

abs light only comes on after 3k revs. and not all the time. once the abs light has been on for about 5 mins the eml comes on. im thinking the sensor off the 202 that i grafted on is a little 2 short. im going to test the circuit tommorow in the light. may look at trying a lexus sensor as they are slightly longer. will keep you updated.

Do you still have the original sensor to compare against ?

no it was broken when i got the car home and reconnected the abs light. i think im going to have to bite the bullet and get a new one. how ever teds car has just thrown a code 42 and he doesnt have abs, do i have 2 different problems? abs fault and the eml code?

just to confirm my code 42 was because my speedo wasnt working due to me messing up my mph converter box

On my clio, the speed signal was derived from the ABS sensors - when I had a dodgy one, the speedo would read 3/4 speed until the ABS light came on so it obviously averages.

I'm not aware the celica does this, and should derive the speed signal from the normal sensor in the gearbox as far as I'm aware. Do you find the speedo keeps dropping to 0 ?

not had any issues with the spedo, abs light comes on and 10 seconds later the eml. its a bit perplexing.

As chris has said they are completely seperate systems, sensors are easy to diagnose just test the resistance and compare to the other side iirc they are around 1.5 ohms, rears are lower, usually if there is a sensor resistance issue then the abs will stay on but the usual reason for abs light coming on when moving is the fact that the exciter ring on the front (usually) driveshaft has snapped

Your problem is very strange with the fact that the eml and abs light are coming on together but I have come across this before the problem was the boost controller was wired into the abs live feed took this out and it was fine the car went into limp mode and everything took me a while to find the problem

That could be possible as someone wired boost gauge light to indicator earth!
