Post subject:  My CS lost boost (code 34) Now does 10MPG!!!!

Hi guys, was away on hol in the CS and was showing off the 'power' to a mate when I hit fuel cut as soon as I hit boost???? I checked all hoses and nowts the matter!!! Started her up again and all was well????
Next day I checked and found a code 34 so I reset the ECU by pulling the fuse for 10 seconds.
I then started the 60 mile drive home with about 8 gallons in................. nearly ran out of petrol after 50 miles :).... I thought I had heard some popping and backfires as I was going down the A1. Put 3 gallons in and 'just' made the last 10 miles home...... FFS!!! what has gone wrong?
Do I hate............ or do I love the car?????
Thanks for any advise and Big thanks to someone I will mention later who gave me advice by text :)

On a 185, the boost cut affects running until the code is cleared. They changed this on a 205 so that after the cut it's business as usual.
Check for codes again and make sure you cleared the boost cut code, and obviously check for new codes.

How was it running while drinking petrol ? Did it feel lumpy, and if so was it worse on boost / off boost / very light throttle. How was the idling ?

Do you have a dump valve ?

I found that on a stock ECU, the first run after a reset results in a lumpy idle and rough running engine. Switch it off and on again and all is good. Did you took off for home right after the reset?

As I understand from daryl who's looked at the software, the ECU runs a 'safe map' and goes through a self learning process after a reset.

Maybe the safe map includes chucking in loads of fuel.

Hi lads and cheers.
I have checked and I have no codes after returning home. She ran very sweet on the way back and it was a constant 60-85mph all the way (wife was with me :) ) I had noticed a bit 'popping' on over-run but she boosted fine and had a regular tickover. I only spotted the excesive fuel use at traffic lights about 10 mile from home and my thoughts were that I had sprung a fuel leak!!! I knew I had more than enough fuel in when I set off back. I put 3 more gallon in and made it home. There was no leak.
When I think back to the reset after the code 34 and ensuing fuel cut, I stupidly started her up with the paper clip still in!!!! Switched off and removed it straight away then started and ran all the way towards home but needed to fill her up after 60 miles (about anhour later).
When she first did the '34', I think just switching off and starting again got rid of the overboost/fuel cut scenario.... but she may have been supping fuel then (couple of miles back to the cottage) untill I did the reset the next morning.
I have no dump valve btw.
I think I'll reset again (even though no codes) and do a gentle run followed by an aggresive one and see how much fuel she is getting through!!! Wish I had a computer or whatever to show mpg, instesd of having to do 20+ miles to check :)
Thanks for any thoughts.

well if its not leaking fuel ( my first thought on the old fuels lines ) then its throwing it into the engine to burn.

if the last drive was a normal speed one, with the engine stone cold, remove the spark plugs and inspect, if all the same colour, then i would say fueling issues are from either water temp sensor ! or the air flap stuck open, or not fully closing.
if only one plug is blacker than the others then i'd say injector fault, ie. stuck open. if you have access to stephscope, you can listen to them opening closing / fuel flowing in the lines / filter / and each injector openning/closing.

Oh wel!!! She is back to normal now. :) 20+ mpg yesterday. Weird???
What is the root cause (generally) of a code 34?
I'd like to know, in case she goes again!! Cheers guys.

See http://www.gtfours.co.uk/how_to/error/205/error_codes2.jpg
Same for 165 so would assume it is the same for the 185.
Code 34 = TPS - Turbocharging Pressure Signal - Fuel cut due to excessive turbo pressure.

Check all the plumbing to the actuator etc, leaks here can result in the wastegate not opening = higher boost.

Temperatures have dropped lately which will lead to slightly higher boost. This can cause fuel cut if you have aftermarket boost control or a big exhaust causing boost creep.

Thanks again guys, I'm sure the plumbing/actuator are ok and she is back to normal now :)
On the day it happened I was 'showing off' a bit and it was cold and damp!!!!
When I reset her I did quite a long 'spirited' run and guess this put the ECU into a fairly aggresive mode. I've re-reset and done a gentle/mixed drive and she seems settled.
Oh the joys of fours.
