I am certain these things exist but don't know what they are called or where I am likely to find one for sale.

It is a device which I believe will fit a drill or a power screwdriver which is designed to remove screws with knackered heads on them. It has a reverse thread on it so it bores down into the screw and unscrews it when it bites in place.

I need one to remove a fairly small screw (one of the ones that holds a St205 wingmirror to it's mounting arm. I have discovered now that they are made of play-dough

TIA

Paul, use easiouts VERY carefully. Snapping one os these inside a stud or bolt leaves you in a world of pain!

I have only ever had very limited success with easi-outs and such like.

To be honest nowadays I don't bother and just drill them out

The stud extractor in the link above does a good job of removing difficult to remove but for hard to remove studs you will require something more heavy duty, the ones above are only intended for fairly light duty imho.

Cheers for the advice, Kris but the screws in question are so soft that I can make a dent in them by biting them  I think the biggest risk I have is in destroying the top of the screw further byt trying to get it out. And then I can still drill it out.

It's all a bit irritating really. I got a new wing mirror cheap but the mount got damaged in the post so I want make a mix 'n' match of the two, but the screws are rubbish and fell apart around me. Maybe it's a security thing to stop people from stealing your wingmirrors :)
