Hi all,

I think most of us will be familiar with the obvious differences between the WRC or Group A cars and the non WRC models such as Antilag, Water sprayer etc. But what about the less obvious items.

Whilst helping Don (TrackToyFour) out a few weekends ago with some wiring on his car, we had the back seats out and I noticed something a little odd.

The floorpan beneath the rear seats in my 1996 non WRC car looks like this (I have vacuumed up the little bits since the pic was taken!)

Image

The soundproofing matting extends across both sides of the car. However on Don's 1994 WRC car as can be seen below it is only present on one side:-

I did once hear a rumour that the WRC possessed less soundproofing material than the non WRC car but had always dismissed it as there was no proof. However with these pictures is there something behind it? Or is it just a case of Don's car being early 1994 and my car being late 1996 the spec was different?

Thoughts anyone? :)

Why is the bing missing from Don's car? Has this section received some work in the past?

Find it a little difficult to see why only 1 half had soundproofing. If anything I would suspect that it had all or no soundproofing?

The bung is missing as the port was being used to pass cables through.

Seems a bit strange to only have one half missing. Surely it'd be both sides or none at all....

the right side may have been let on to deaden the exhaust a little as this is a road version for numbers maybe.

the out and out rc may have had it all removed?

That was my thinking too......deaden the exhaust noise and maybe some heat protection too.

The missing bung was because I was in the middle of installing the rear diff temp sensor cable. Thought it was very handy of Mr T to provide a bung there :)

Wow,
The whole floor is fitted the other way round

Oh, wait........

That is truly weird. The panel looks suspiciously clean (unless you've been out with the cleaner) but there are no signs that soundproofing has been removed so unless it's had some major surgery including a new rear floor I'd have to say it left the factory like that.

Are you sure about that?

I guess the options are:

1. There is a factory diffreence by choice between 1994 and 1996
2. They forgot to do one side in Don's car for some reason or another
3. There is a difference by choice between the WRC and the normal ST205
4. It was remove by a previous owner at some point for reasons onknown.

I propose that we all remove our rear seats and see what we have then collate the results here.
Now we just need someone to get the ball rolling

Ah yes I see now, the photo was taken looking from the boot towards the front of the car.

I now agree that the sound proofing is by the exhaust! Doh!

Have you lifted up the carpet in the passenger and drivers footwells to see if there are any differences regarding soundproofing here yet?

Whilst various fitxtures and fittings are removed is it possible to establish
or not, another myth? that the WRC/ grpA models have addational welding?
Or is that only possible from underneath.

i think the extra welding story was a myth
certainly the pukka TTE shells would have had additional welding (i believe they pulled them off the assembly line just as the shells were completed, prior to putting on soundproofing or anything else) compared to the road going versions

thats my understanding of the TTE 165's, so its entirely possible the same procedure was followed for the 185 and 205
