hi :)

in an effort to maintain intake temperatures (and for a little track bling) i am going to add ducting to my bumper in order to force as much air as possible through the FMIC.

http://www.andrewmcc.com/weldedcage/12front.jpg

my questions are thus:

1. what type of material should i be looking to use? obviously this is a DIY solution so i was thinking some kind of thick plastic sheeting that i can jury rig into position
2. how should i attach it to the FMIC? it is made of aluminium.
3. how should i attach it to the bumper front? my initial thought is to use pop rivets, but these could be a pain to remove if i need to remove/replace the ducting.

ideas, suggestions, please :)

andy

1) Plastic good. Aldi (or ?LIDL, forget which) were also selling heat guns for 8 of our earth pounds. Very useful :D

2,3) Sikaflex. It's structural grade, will allow for any flex and, with the aid of a Stanley knife, removable should the need arise
Oh, sticks anything to anything pretty much too. The only down side is that since it became officially structually qualified by the motor industry prices have gone from ~4 squids to ~20 :(
I dare say the trade now use something different. Call in you your local body shop and find out what they use and whether they'd give you a tube

I think I would choose to use 3mm aluminium, and probably get it powder coated (for purely aesthetic reasons) prior to fitting. Gentle bends can be achieved without much effort, and cutting and welding shouldn't be too hard either for more serious shaping.

Attachment to the fmic is easy (ali to ali), but as you say, how to attach it to the plastic bumper lip in a way that looks and is 'solid', but still be removable? What about tiny little nuts and bolts; perhaps stainless with a rubber washer for the ali cantact point? What about little wing-nuts...I think they look quite hard

I noticed some of the rally cars at the BRC Live! event held at Mallory Park recently had quite neat pop-riveted aluminium ducting around the radiators. WRC guys use Kevlar but that would be a bit more involved making up moulds etc.
