Post subject: | Red oil light queston |
My UK CS for the last three mornings had the red oil light showing when starting up. It lights up with all the others on ignition then when the engine starts it stays on for about 2 secs, flickers and then goes out. It only does this 1st thing in the morning. The car is at Smithy's now and Ian said he'll see if he can find the cause. I was just wondering if others have had this and what the outcome was. If my oil pump needs replacing then it won't be too bad as the engine will be out of the car whilst at Smithy's anyway. Any thoughts, opinions and suggestions welcome. Thanks guys. Steve |

Hmm, It's taking a little time to build oil pressure then. This could be nasty, could not be Simple solution :- the non return valve in the oil filter has packed up What make is fitted? Moderate solution :- the pressure relief valve is faulty although this seems unlikely Middle ground - oil pump is worn and the out of spec blade->housing clearance is resulting in some pressure buildup time Worst case - you don't want to know ![]() Do you have a pressure gauge to see what the normal running pressures are? Also, does the engine sound clanky when first started. It could potentially be a duff sensor that sticks shut for a little bit before the oil pressure activates it |

Steve - if you are concerned then measuring the pressure would help to offer a reason for your concerns? As two_OH_five suggests - these are all valid reasons The relief valve for the 185 is in the oil pump, unlike the 205. I believe this is swapped out on the 185 along with the pump, which is not a job for the faint hearted... A clue might be as Steve suggests - does it "clonk" on start up, especially when left for a period of time and cold? |

The red oil light stayed on for about a second after startup and then flickered before going out. Last three days before I dropped it off at Smithy's. The engine sounds fine when starting from cold and settles nicely at 800rpm in good time. The engine is very smooth and quiet when driven. My current oil filter is a Toyota one....I wouldn't buy anything else. Ian did say it could be the oil pump on it's way. Whilst the engine is out for the clutch change it might be a good idea to check it out. I will call him tomorrow. In the meantime there is nowt more I can do. |

Well Ian has done the nessesary checks and all is ok with the car. he put it down to the oil I'm using and that it seems the oil filter isnt filling up with oil as it should. new oil and filter change is due anyway so that'll be done when i get the car back. phew...I'm happy now. ![]() |

Who's Paul and when do you get your car back? Edited...sorry Ian.. ![]() ![]() Getting it back this Sat. mate. can't wait. Been driving it like Miss Daisy for the last 2 months nursing the clutch and saving on fuel to help with the repair bill. Slight down that apparently my aux. belts were knackered so they have been replaced and I have also given ian the thumbs up for another timing belt while the engins out even though my current belt has only done 37k. piece of mind. Was preparing myself to fork out for an oil pump so I'm happy enough. ![]() |

Good news Steve Glad it was the simple end of the scale, not the worst case! |
