Hi all,
any advice from UK people for this trip I'll probably have to do in January?

I'll have to go near Guildford, and the car seems to be way cheaper that arrive there by flight and then rent a car for 5 days...

What about the Channel? Boat or Tunnel?

Thanks!

Price is similar for boat or tunnel on dover / calais, but tunnel is quicker. Make sure you book early to get best price. If you're coming up through the mont blanc tunnel it may be less road miles to get a longer ferry crossing like le-harve / Portsmouth but the crossing is quite a few hours and may cost more.

Oh, and remember to drive on the left once over here

p.s. we normally have our regular meets not far from Guildford so give us a bit of warning & we can probably arragnge a meet while you're here.

We will see...

Thanks Chris!

If it's for business is it not on expenses?

There's a few members that live near Guildford (me included) - would be great to meet up one evening if you have time.

Hi 205,

Bilbao is in Spain... and almost the same kms to go to UK from here!

Ryan or Easy jet, round trip is around 300 euros...
plus I'll have to rent a car for 5 days... another 300 euros plus fuel...

1450+1450 kms from Parma to Guildford will cost me 200/250 euros of fuel with my mother's LPG Daihatsu Materia...

I'll probably be there for... "fun"... an ecu mapping advanced course!

Fantastic!!!
You all talking, and me drinking all the time because I'll understand NOTHING of what you'll be saying!
Read/write "quite" well, but when it comes to listen/understand is terrible for me... unfortunately, years ago, WE had to have more Latin hours than English...
This is why I'm still quite undecided about doing or not the course... really afraid to waste my money!

Thanks anyway Muddy

A quick look at the Ferry cost shows that apart from the distance (kinda overlooked that  ) it's also "quite" expensive. It would probably be cheaper to drive overland in the GT4. Via Moscow

I wouldn't worry about it...we always manage to get by.

I'll personally make sure that you are ok and not left out.
I know what it's like to turn up in a foreign country not being able to speak the language and then expected to get by.

How's your french?
Je parle tres bien francais :D

Hi Wolf,
Is this an efi university course run by Ben Strader? If so have you got any more details of the course? Have you read his book? IMHO it is well worth a read before you attend a mapping course as it will generate some specific questions :-)

Car hire for 5 days can be found for around £120 or 140 euros. Flights seem expensive too if they are working out at 300 euros. saying that they bloody charge you to sneeze on Ryanair now :-( If you need any help organising stuff give me a shout - I am local to Guildford too.

Hi Diceman,
yes it's the EFI course...
I didn't read their book, but I read many other... and I'm quite familiar with engines, mapping and ecus...
I think the only one problem would be with the spoken English...

Yes... 140 euros plus around 350 euros for Ryanair flight round trip... way cheaper my mother's LPG car! :D

Thanks for the support, I'll let you know! :)

I believe that one of the good points of the course is that the lectures are provided in printed hard copy for you to take away. This may help you to understand. Maybe ask them for a copy before you attend to read and interpret any items you may struggle with?

IMHO buy the book. Ben Strader has some items he teaches that I am not 100% comfortable with how he demonstrates. IIRC one of these is AFR for maximum power. He is reported to demonstrate how an NA car with an afr of 10% variance effects the peak BHP very little compared to a 10% variance in timing. My issue is that he picks an AFR 5% either side of where peak BHP should be made!

When & where is the course or any links? A friend of mine did the basic course a fair few years back and was happy with the content.

I may be tempted to go do the course dependant on dates/availability & cost :-)
