I will firstly put both hands up and admit I have been a prize *bleep*.

I will secondly admit to be a prize anorak and my first or second hobby after taking Gt-fours to bits is Hi-Fi.

I spotted some speakers for sale that I have always wanted to try, probably a once in a lifetime opportunity that some came up that I could afford. looked up dimensions and realised that I could get them in to my loft room, they are so big there is no way Ms Diceman would let me know keep them in the lounge and TBF they consume the room far too much for general TV/Friends over type use for a lounge!

To set the stage - my loft room has a regular access hatch with foldy ladder, the hatch is large enough to fit the speakers through if in the vertical plane.
The speakers are nominally 48" H x 24" W x 2" deep.

Pics - yes they are big.

What I hadn't banked on is how difficult they are to move. They are reported to be 70 lbs each or 32KG - they feel more like 45-50KG. A lot more than my estimated 15KG prior to purchase!

Any bright ideas on how to lift/hoist them up?

Thanks for the offer Nigel, much appreciated.

Mike & I lifted these out of the car. Our thoughts are that standard human power is not sufficient to lift these above your head even if we had 4 guys (2 downstairs & 2 upstairs.)

I suspect some form of lifting platform or A frame hoist woudl be required.

I have a block and tackle you are welcome to borrow. Makes lifting even a 450kg FFord dead easy 8) You do need a suitable RSJ or skyhook to attach it to!

He bought them from someone called Zaphod Beeblebrox who was selling off stuff from a ship he'd aquired. Used to belong to a rock band apparently.

When the package arrived, this sign was stuck on it.

p.s.

I would have thought a small army of people gathering for a curry night should be enough to propel them upwards if you don't have a suitable beam above the hole for a winch.

If it's any help, I've just bought a trailer winch.

They are Apogee Caliper Signatures. The silver opening parts you can see are the diaphragm which is basically a thin sheet of "Mylar" (like a non-stretchy cling film) with an aluminium ribbon stuck on to to conduct the signal, this floats between a bank of magnets (the reason they are so heavy)the rear face is open as well.

The problem is that this diaphragm is open to the atmosphere and very easy to stick your finger/fist through. As such I don't think more men will help (there is minimal areas you can actually pick them up by.) Sticking a finger or hand through them will result in a £2000 rebuild being required which is to be avoided!

Many thanks for all the offers of assistance though - very kind guys :-)

I think I am going to start measuring up to build an A-frame above the hatch and hoist them up.

I think I have bought some more time with Ms Diceman, after spending the weekend listening to them she actually quite likes them :-) Not enough for a long-term pass for lounge habitation but a few weeks.

CDB is very close to their origin. I bumped in to a guy who was selling off the sound system from the nightclub at the end of the universe. Apparently with rising fuel costs they have had to close down due to lack of trade.

Been there and done that! When I used to work for Elemental Audio, makers of the worlds finest isolation platforms and the Helios tone arm (about £2500 worth of SME reference beating kit), I used to know Jim Carfrae. He had to have a set of special cases made up to deliver his Tractrix horns in. He then used to take the cases home for the next sale!

Shame you're having to put them upstairs away from a decent floor as you'll lose a lot without a solid base. I'd be tempted to put some heavy slabs of concrete under them if the floor will take the load to tighten the base up and focus the imagery.

So says he with the mp3 player and an old set of computer speakers for sounds! Lol! (The real stuff is in the loft waiting for a room again!)

Of course, if you wanted a bespoke set of platforms making I might be persuade to build something again!
