My Dad spent a few years of his early career (long before I existed) working for the British Iron & Steel research association. He has often told of a supervisor at one works who used to direct his workers like a conductor as it was far to noisy to shout. Anyway, last night he was watching telly and saw some film of him. A bit of detective work threw up the name 'The big melt' by Jarvis Cocker & Martin Wallace which was aired on BBC 4 'storyville'.

Quite an interesting film including footage from the last 100 years of steelmaking set to music. The film of 'Barbirolli' (the guys nickname) is at 1:03 ish and a few other places.

Available to view for a couple of months apparently, and worth a watch from the looks of it (I've only skimmed so far). Hopefully I'll figure out how to get a permanent copy by then.

Turns out it's available on DVD so I'll buy a copy. IMO a really well put together film and one I'm happy to donate some royalties.
