Jeff,
If you feel confident
Pull the lid off the relay screwed to the ecu and check the contacts
The symptoms could be due to damaged contact in that main relay

If you don't I would suggest (subject to approval) send that relay to Chris for inspection

+1.

Just leave the relay attached to the ECU and unplug it from the loom along with the ECU (that's 4 plugs total) and send the lot.

My past experience is that the whenever I've tried to unplug the relay, the connector is stuck like <censored> to a blanket. If yours is the same, unscrew the relay from the ECU and just send the ECU. I doubt it's the relay but as Steve says, it may cause similar symptoms (although I'd expect misfires while running).

Oky doky... give me a few days to rest my bad back and I will unplug the ECU and send it Ta.
Do not know if this helps with the analysis of the problem BUT.... the intercooler pump runs every time I switch ignition on.... weird?... even in 'passive alarm' mode ???
Oh bugger it. I'm having a dozed pancakes for 'T' in a few mins :)
Sod the CS... faffs forever.... but I love my CS :(

All kinds of jiggery and, indeed, no small amount of pokery can ensue if the ecu has gone loopy

We can all see signs of distress which means the ECU needs refilling with magic smoke.
I have some doubt that this is the only problem but without a sound ecu you can't really diagnose other issues if there are any

I'll call a food meet so I can test it in Daryls CS before sending it back (he doesn't know it yet  ) Then at least you'll know the ECU's ok.

Thanks Hally but most of the 'grunt' is done now. The car is in my garage and I have very little width to work in but I think I can manage with my legs out the window :) ta.
I'll let you know when it is parceled up.

Finally got to the post office while it was open this morning.

Daryl should be popping in Mon or Tues evening so I'll test the repaired ECU before shipping it back.

Appologies for the low quality camera picture taken through a magnifying glass.

I had a brief look at it with a myeyecroscope and it doesn't look terminal but there might be a track break

Chris reckons the circuit is connected to the idle control valve under the throttlebody which might explain a few things

It appears all tracks were still connected so, assuming the problem is cured, the symptoms are caused by lack of capacitance allowing electrical noise while solenoids are being driven to cause havoc with the processor.

Hopefully Daryl's popping in tonight and we'll swap the ECU in to his CS for a day to test.
