My 185 failed it's MOT today.
Corroded brake lines.

I am considering running the new lines inside the car, has anyone else done this?

Andy has as far as I know

I think I'd keep mine external unless going for a real track weapon where the reduced risk of kitty litter line removal would outweigh the effort
The stock lines have lasted 15 years and I'm pretty sure another replacement set will outlast the rest of the car :D

hi :)
i rolled my own from auto factors standard 3/16th copper line

i have the additional advantage of having a stripped car, so can run the lines where i like.

one thing i would say however, is to run the copper lines inside a length of rubber tubing. this will prevent chafing and generally protect the lines a tad.

brake lines really are easy to do, just take your time and be sure to DOUBLE FLARE the ends!*

*single flares can pop under heavy breaking, as i found out when testing the braking ability of my car

Andy - what's the double flaring I have seen you mention a few times?

this page can explain better than i can :)

http://robrobinette.com/flare_brake_line.htm

basically tho, flare it out with the adapter die, then flare the line back in again with the "press".

makes the ends stronger, so they wont deform under the 1200+psi pressure you will exert on the line under heavy breaking

Another 185 (my mate's new car) failed it's MOT today.

Corroded brake lines, same place as mine.

It seems the plastic covers over the lines do a fine job of keeping all the crap in and thus causing corrosion.
MOT tester reckons it is one of the worst routings he has ever seen and is just asking for trouble.

OK, thread ressurection time!

I now have a trackday deadline to work to so I need to actually start work on the car.

Does anyone have a diagram of the braking system for ABS and non-ABS cars?
I'm going to lose the ABS, run the rear lines in the car and generally tidy up the pipe routing.

Pics look like they are from an ST205. I would have thought that the ST185 would be different?

I think it is a JAP St185.
1) Looks like St185
2) St202 IIRC is a jap chasiis number
3) No ABS = must be JAP spec
4) I suspect it is pictures of Datajon's project shell

Doh!

Pics above are from a Jap 205. Probably won't help too much Mr Doomanic, sorry!

if youre going to remove the abs, you need a 3/16th 3-way adapter from demon tweeks (£7) and to reuse the existing bias valve from your setup. this is assuming the 185 is the same as the 165

you should have something like this on your existing brake setup. this is the bias valve

from the master cylinder, run one of the outlets into the t-piece and take both lines from this to the front brakes.

with the bias valve, run the other master cylinder feed to the entry of this, then take off the rear caliper feeds from this.

easy really. the devil is in the detail :) in the picture above, the copper pipe is the MC feed and the OEM pipes are the ones to the rear left/right
