Here's a quick and simple test you can try
Jumpstart the car. Then disconnect the battery. It should stay running. If it doesn't your alternator is probably goosed.
If it stays running then your battery is goosed and your alternator might be. Howeever, it is unusual for batteries to just suddenly die without some warning. You'll generally find that it starts cranking slowly, goes flat overnight etc, etc
If you remove the alternator your repair guy will be able to tell you if it's knackered or not. He shold be able to spin it up and test outputs. This is why I suggesteda Halfrauds loading test. They can test both alternator and battery condition but it seems to be too late for you
From the description I'd be pretty confident that it's a charging failure (car starts running badly and gets progressivly worse up to the point of complete non running). If you can borrow a known good battery it should run again and allow for diagnosis with a multimeter at home (low voltage will indicate charging failure).
If not then your best bet is to go with the most likely solution which is the alternator refurb
