Im going to be taking the engine out of mutley tomorrow, I think it needs to come out the top as i have removed the suspension wheels brakes etc.

Question is - can anyone provide a quickish guide and an insight on what to look out for when removing the engine.

First question really is - do i need to detatch the gearbox?

any help will be as ever greatfully received

Ta
Rob

It will come out either way. I have no experience from the top, but I have via the bottom route.

No. It remains on which ever way you come out. Be aware that I believe an extreme angle is required on the engine when dragging it out through the top.

Watch out for the power steering pump "ears".

Unless you have an engine crane from hell you will probably find you need to remove the bumper cover to get the necessary reach

Don't forget to mark the prop when you split it at the first union so it goes back together at the same place :)

its far easier to bring it out the bottom. if you have a sheet of plywood or something else, drop the engine and gearbox onto it as one unit and with a friend, drag it clear of the car. its normally easier to pull the engine out through the passenger side of the car, on a diagonal.

now youve taken the easy option and removed the suspension and subframe etc, physically removing the engine is relatively simple.

the subframe should have been one of the first things you removed :)

If you remove from the top you will certainly need a load leveller to attach to your engine crane.

I found that disconnecting the loom at the ecu and poking the whole thing through the bulkhead was the easiest method for sorting that bit.

I'd also undo the rear engine mount first, simply from a safety point of view as you wont have to go under the car with the crane supporting the engine.

Yes. You can remove the lower suspension arms etc etc and the sub frame all as a complete unit.

i've nearly done it.. couldn't take it out the bottom as there are no rear wheels, suspension etc.

Seems to be catching on something - do i need to remove the steering rack?

No, but the rack is connected to the power steering pump - is this undone?

Also the protrusion where the propshaft goes into the gearbox has to clear the steering rack, I found aligning this to be a bit awkward, both in taking the engineout and putting it back in.
