Well, guys the saga continues. After burning the midnight oil a few nights to sort the exhaust and manifold the car was running better then it ever has since i've had it (big smiles). Anyway last week I took it to the lake district and everything was going great until we came up with the outrageous idea of driving the Hardknock Pass and yes you've probably guessed the head gasket didn't like it.
What i'm wanting to know is there anything to look out for when pulling the head off or putting it on, etc. or is it fairly straight forward. Also I'm after some advice on the head gasket its self, what's the advantages or disadvantages on the steel gaskets from Fennsport and are they worth the cost and also what about the thickness, I think i'll be looking at reliability rather then performance. Cheers guys, Dorris

Go for a MHG from an ST205.
Goes straight on, no messing about and costs under £50 from Mr T
I've done 3 now and all the cars are still going strong, two at 12psi and one stock.

Wise words :)

I'd also fit ARP head studs for added advantage.

I have a brand new 205 MHG for sale for £25 delivered :)

Thanks for the reply but now i'm wondering what the advantages are in running a 205 gasket on a 185 or is just as simple as the fact that the 185 didn't run a MHG. For some reason I expected a head gasket from Toyota to cost more then £50. Dorris

These MHGs I take it they are of the laminated aluminium type or are they a lot more solid one piece?

They are multilayered, 4 layers I think?

From what I have read in the past I thought the waterways were a bit different on the 185 head. Meaning that the 205 HG is fine if you have a 205 head fitted but there are better options if you are still on a 185 head.

But I could be wrong (again) cos I tend not to pay much attention to 185 related tech threads...

I thought this when I fitted the first 205 MHG to a 185 and duplicted the waterway holes on the gasket. All the holes are in the right places, but some are a different size.
On the second and third engines I didn't bother and there has been no noticable difference in engine temp.

Cool. I guess it's not an issue then. Noted for future babbling :)

Just a question or two if i may? What is the thickness of a 205 head gasket ? And is that any different to the 185 stock hg ? Thanks all.

apprently the stock 205 gasket is 1.2mm whereas the 185 paper gasket is 1.0mm

I can give you a definite answer this week as I will have 2 brand new head gaskets through, one card, one metal. I'll mic them up and let you know. I'd assume the metal gasket would be thicker as it crushes down the laminate layers more then a card one would when you torque the head down. Dorris
