Do you have a deep reach 10mm socket? That should get the little tinker off! Or a 10mm spanner should be fine :)

Also, you you still have the black rubber cold air feed snorkel to the alternator still fitted? Removing this will give you better access :)

As Kris suggested - I use a 10mm deep socket with a 'wibbly' extension bar to get a little extra articulation, works a treat. :)

hi all,
i have tried alssorts of different sockets (for 2.5 hrs yesterday), i cannoat get a spanner in there as the oil filter is in the way. i dont want to change the oil and filter. as its an extra job im not ready for.
i have followwed as per kris instructions for removal (alt inducting pipe etc)but cant get a decent grip on the nut.

it looks so straight forward, just cant get this nut off.

what is a deep socket. i though i wuld need something shallow tobe able to slip over the nut passed the thing thats hindering me.
as i said the thiing directly under that screwis the reason i cant get a socket over the thermostat nut wholly.

an extension bar that allows the socket to "wobble" (a bit like a u/j but without the mechanical joint) should do the trick

hi all,
thanks for your hel-p. i have managed to complete it.

a couple of points for people to note for future. for st185s.

1) remove the oilf filter to get easy access to the thermostat nuts.

2) the thermostat, once u have removed the nut. will have to be jiggled out between the bottom bolt and the nut thing
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a161/ ... G_1935.jpg

3) to replace the thermostat housing will be an even bigger pita.
i would suggest filing or hacksawing a little off the end of the bottom bolt. so the thermostat can easily be replaced over the bolt.

3 days to a do a 10 min job.
we live and learn.

Looks like the access to the 185 stat is a bit more difficult than the 165 or the 205.

See your problem now as the socket fould on the bolt for the aircon compressor :(

Would a ratchet type spanner been of any help?

i tried many different tools kris. i reckon the best way to do wouldbe remove the oil filter.
also when filing or dremmelling the stud down to replace the thermostat housing , make sure you cover the bit where the oil filter goes. as bits of metal shards in there BAD...
