Hi there

just had the good news :)

It is good news really, as it could easily have been much worse as i havn't spent much time working on the car as such for about 8 months, and i suppose these things are going to need replacing with time.

I'm going to have a proper look tomorrow and get the manual out to see what I need to do/replace.

Does anyone have any knowledge relating to 'excessive play in the front ball joint'. I envisage new parts from mr T and hopefully a job I can tackle myself? Will this mean my full alignment/tracking set up at Tracktive a few months ago will be negated?

TIA for any help

Karl

Karl, good news!

The ball joint they are referring to is bolted to the wishbone, (3 bolts).

Straightforward to replace and iirc ~£30 from any Blueprint dealer?

Since you will be splitting the suspension I wold say it would be a wise idea to recheck the alignment post repairs

Awesome...thanks gary :D

Have you done this job before...any tips

Just to confirm, these ball joints are not handed are they...eg ns and os are identical and interchangeable? If this is the case I will likely buy 2 identical parts off Ebay...I will check tcb first though as they seem to stock some random new parts at good prices.

In your post you mention part # 43330-29146; I take it this is the toyota part numer?

Does this mean that subs # 43330-29185 JOINT ASSY, LOWER BALL, FRONT are the parts required to fit the ball joint eg bolts/washers etc?

All I need now are pictures and a 'how to' guide...then I can get one of the 12 year olds who hang round my lock up to do the job while I sunbathe and drink coke 8)

Thanks again fella

EPC does NOT list specific left or right handed parts...

having not done the job myself...how hard can it be > 3 bolts :?

I can't confirm if the Toyota Lower Ball Assy includes everything... but looking at the ebay pics >>the aftermarket parts appear to include all the necessary nuts and bolts.

I am getting the ball joints from mr T; they are £37.86 + vat per side, and come with all of the necessary cotter pins, nuts and bolts etc. Typically lazy, the rhino is known to take the easy option wherever possible :)

I've been under the car to have a look at the job, and this is what I found; the red arrows indicate the nuts I think I need to undo

It looks to my novice eye that it should be possible to do the job without removing the hub etc. However, in my Chilton manual it says the process is:
REMOVAL
1) remove the steering knuckle with axle hub and mount assembly in a vice
2) remove the dust deflector
3) remove the cotter pin and nut. Using a puller (SST i presume) remove the lower ball joint
INSTALL
4) install the lower ball joint and temporarily tighten with the old nut to 20Nm. Remove the old nut and tighten a new nut to final specifications (what's the point of this???
5) install a new cotter pin
6) install dust deflector. Install steering knuckle with axle hub

TBH I have a go at most things, but I really cannot be bothered with this one at the moment, especially if it requires all of the above. I know that even with the above it is a relatively tiny job, but anything requiring more than 1 hour effort and currently I cannee be ars*d. I think a visit to the garage and a bruised wallet is looking likely

Thanks for all the help gents, and apologies for being such a lame puss :(

Karl,

yep, right bit! There are 3 bolts that connect to the wishbone...one it cunningly hidden!
