Evening all :)

Since I had a 205 box fitted to the 165, there has been an annoying squeak whenever I depress the clutch. I have ignored it for ages; but now it is getting very very annoying.

The noise is coming from the slave cylinder; I am planning to get a new one from mr t and fit it myself.

Has anyone got any advice?

Should I replace the master at the same time?

I'm guessing I need to drain the clutch fluid?

Anyone know how much they are?

TIA

did you grease the pivot ball of the release fork mechanism when you fitted the box?

usually dry these will cause squeaks from that area....i doubt very much it's the slave cylinder itself.

The pivot ball is inside the gearbox and I doubt it will be accessible with the gearbox in place.

Maybe by pulling off the rubber gaitor from the release fork and the cunning use of a SMALL amount of grease you'll manage to get a little on the rear of the arm and to the pivot ball?

As you have hinted Kris, my squeak is going to be an arse to deal with based on what I have found today

I found this open when I went under the car(the lower one, I removed the rubber plug off the top hole)...

I'm assuming there should be a rubber bung in place that might have either fallen out or not been refitted when the box was changed. Guessing that water etc has gotten inside the casing and 'dried things up'...causing the squeak? The noise seems localised to this area rather than the slave cylinder (though they are quite close together it is noticeable).

I removed the rubber gaitor from 'the top' and got a poor pic with my phone

I removed the accordion rubber gaitor and applied some grease just in case, but it made no difference.

I'm guessing that this problem is a box off job, or can I liberally squirt grease through the open hole lol

This I'm sure will finally result in a gearbox off job!

All the gearboxes are pretty similar with small revisions between the models/years.

The fork area looks something like this (165 box pictured):

The release fork pivots on the "pivot" which does wear and if runs dry will squeek:

The pivot can be replaced and is pretty cheap. Access to this might prove "interesting" to say the least!

Is there any chance it could be the contact area between the slave cylinder and the release fork?
Image

Are you 100% sure it's coming from the gearbox? Is the squeek present when the engine is off as well as on?

Quite often the master cylinders squeek, and that's not a pleasant job either!!

The squeak (or squeek...how is it bl**dy spelt) is very apparent engine on or off. I have put my ear mm's from both the clutch slave cylinder release fork union, and the hole I referred to earlier that I reckon should have a bung, and the squeik is much louder when my ear is next to the hole...no doubt in my mind it is from within:cry:

Thanks for the images of the 165 box Kris...it looks like I can angle my grease gun nozzle in through the release fork aperture, down the ns edge of the release fork and with luck put a dollop of grease in the vicinity of the pivot...and then get a bung for the hole! A bit of grease in these neck of the woods cannot do any harm can it?
