hi all. hope you all enjoying our fab summer
i was wondering if anyone has any experience or has heard about k-seal. it is something you pour into the rad and it will seal leaks and cracked heads and HG's.
as described on the bottle.
want to know whether the is good or bad and if it is a viable option as a temp measure if my HG has/ is going.

I know that you said to get a compression test and the sniff test thing. but are they definitive proof if they come up positive for failure. isupposse both combined wud defo be right. but this k-seal is 11.99 and i thought i could use it temp.
it says it wont do any harm if it hasnt gone.

thanks all. sorry if its inane babble. the tequilas are flowing nicely.

Under no circumstances would I advocate putting this into the engine coolant system,, this is bad news and is best off being kept for agriculturally engineered Minis and Metros :)

The only option if your head gasket has gone is to replace it...

Indeed, not only will such things seal possible holes, but it will coat everything within the system - say no to cholestorol :o

Yep, you'd probably end up having to buy a new radiator!

hello,
thanks your advice was promptly taken on board.

anyhoo's
i took it to a new garage i found near me and they did the sniff test thing and it came back negative for blown HG
 :( :? 8) :) :D

now from what you said on the other post is this a pretty definitive test?

i am chuffed to say the least. although my paranoia has mead eme decide to save to get the HG uprated so then i can turn up boost a bit more and not be ever the paranoid.

once again i am greatful for all your help in keeping my car on the road.

this garage will taclkle many jobs and major mechanical. it would be great to have a one stop shop for major jobs.

what i want to ask is though what would be the minimum you would say to geat head skimmed and HG replaced. this guy said he woiuld do it about £300/£400 depending if there is no other probs.
he seemed to know what he was tlaking about and said about rebuilding etc. ( if the worst was confirmed)
although he said he never done a 4 before. but i guess skimming a head is skimming a head isnt it.

last thing. whilst getting this done. i am defo going to do my rocker cover gaskett and the guy said timing belt whilst its apart.

have you all got links to gaskett kits plus bolts and timing belts please.
not that i am lazy its coz you boys and girls are tried and tested and i dont want to get duffs.

thanks once again to you all.
mahender
oh yeah sorry. i think the smell must be reidue from my previous top hose problems. will give stuff a clean as best i can soon.
unless there could be other stuff going wrong for this symptom.
as said there is no coolant loss and no mayo.

if you have to do a headgasket, its worth doing the stem seals and either recutting the valve seats or lapping the valves back in, recutting is only needed if the seats are badly pitted but the lifter for that valve will have to be reshimmed.

as for the K-seal, i to am very skeptical about products like this, but i have seen it used and it has worked very well, somone i knew had an old cav 2.0 8v with a blowing headgasket, water was leaking into the chambers, he put some K-Seal in and it did the job, and its been going like it for about 2 years now  admitadly it is an old banger and not worth spending the dosh to get the HG done properly, so if it costs a tenner to fix, its worth it.

the valve stem seals sit under the valve spring in the head and stop oil seeping down the valve stem and into the cylinder

as said, they sit under the springs and stop oil running down the stem into the chamber, look a bit like this

and valve lapping, you get a finish like this
