Does anyone know if these KYB's can be reconditioned or repaired? I've been in touch with KYB and they say not - but there is a non-ajustable replacement... :-(

Cheers all

Don't think they can m8 as the inserts are crimped into the strut tube not provided with a threaded top cap.

TBH I would probably look at speaking to Leda about making up some inserts (If Leda was bought up as they went into administration a few months back IIRC). It is not a simple job. I think Datajon has also carried out this mod on Keith's car??

I too think the KYBs are of the crimp top design :(

I'd either buy shocks that can be overhauled or modify the existing ones...

The only ST205 Superstruts I have seen which can be reconditioned are the TRD 'coilover' units. They came with a threaded end cap so you could remove the internal gas tube. The way to tell the difference is to look for the 'flats' on the side of the strut. This is the 'crimping' referred to in the other posts on this thread.

Steve (two-OH-five) did saw a knackered stock damper in half to see what was inside and the top cap is threaded but as the gas tube is crimped that didn't really help. BTW the strut he chpped was degassed before he applied the angle grinder

Hope that helps.

Did the Tein SuperStreets come pre-assembled or were they supplied in component form? Also, I thought the HA's were discontinued?

The new AST struts for the ST205 are probably in component form. Adrian or Tony need to post some pics :P

:( That sucks Rob!

The standard Toyota struts are rebuildable in theory

The top caps are screwed on and should in theory be undoable. In practise I could not undo them so resorted to hackysaurus removius of the top of the strut in the name of science. Plus it was Don's strut :D :D

Think my pictures disappeared though which is ever so slightly annoying :(

However, they can all be rebuilt. It's just a case of ingenuity as shown by DJ

Even if the top caps are crimped they can be cut off and replaced in one form or another by a threaded collar arrangement. The adjustable spring platform can also use the exact same thread too ;)

The big issue is the gurt chock off crimp in the standard MrT damper casings which prevents common inserts from fitting straight in. I believe DJ solved this by cutting the dent out and patching over? Cannot remember if the TRD/KYB ones have this. JP can probably run to the garage and confirm though :D

I always meant to talk to LEDA about doing this but never quite got round to it

My TRD's definitely have the crimped bit on them I am afraid.

It is about time someone came up with an off the shelf kit of bits to allow you to convert the stockers to accept an insert with a bit of cutting.

I think 'off the shelf' and 'a bit of cutting' sums it up. Not an easy job. Answers your own question really!

I think Steve should crack on and convert his ST205 to ST202 McPherson struts so we can see if they work on track  I'm behind you all the way on this
