Hi Folks,

I've got a bit of a persistant problem with the nuts holding the turbo to the exhaust manifold coming loose. I've replaced the nuts with new ones from Mr T but they have come loose again.

Problem is that its difficult to get anything more than a spanner onto them, getting a torque wrench onto them seems impossible.

I am thinking of trying some thread lock but I can't see it coping with the heat. Anyone have any other ideas for keeping the nuts tight?

Cheers, :)

Can't think of a liquid threadlocker that would withstand the heat.

As you look at the end of the nut it is squashed - try placing in a vice and squashing the end a little more.

Some crows foot spanners will help get to the awkward nuts at the rear of the turbo :)

Peter,

Interesting - the turbo support bracket is there but it is not bolted as my turbo is a CT26 based one, the hole on the turbo does not line up with the hole on the bracket, will have a look tomorrow to see if it can be redrilled to accomdate.

Kris - I have some crows feet spanners - will see if I can get in with them.

Anyone know the torque for those bolts?

Cheers,

Mike

iirc, on keiths old ct hybrid tubby we used a grinder to form a slot in the bracket and used a large washer to bolt up the bracket.

i should have the torque setting somewhere, i'll have a look in a bit

Cheers Pete,

64nm isn't even that tight! Must be the bracket not providing the proper support - will go down that road.

Cheers, :)

Yep I’ve suffered from the same problem and the cure is really simple; lock washers! I put spring washers all round, got in there with a socket and a flexi drive and have had no problems since. We have got thread lock in work that can handle high temps but nothing like what you’re asking. If you need any nuts, bolts, washers etc let me know and I'll bring some with me next time we meet up, the only thing I can not get hold of is the nuts and bolts with the fine 1mm pitch. Let me know, Dorris
PS, the support bracket has enough space within the holes to move and line up to the turbo.

there is a company that supplies me at work, they have just got in stock some kind of new locking mechanism for nuts on bolts..

we use thread lock on our products but this new thing is two ring things and they somehow lock into place when tightend up. it might be of interest but im not sure if they would work, they take alot more too unlock than the force that you put in to doing up.
