haha DUH  thanks lol.

here's A pic Tw2 on alltrac.net posted for me.

So.. To remove. Bolts come out, old fibre seal gets tossed. Scrape off old sealant compound. Clean surface (with??). pick out old Crank oil seal, press in new one. Reapply sealant and new fibre seal. and bolt back up to engine?

Is the oil seal just that thin band surrounding the flywheel mount? or is it larger, with some hidden by the flywheel mount, meaning the mount has to comeoff somehow?

That sound right?

Thanks

Yes the seal for the crank is the light red coloured "thing"

I think you might be better of just prising out the old seal and then tapping in a new one - will save the possibility of an oil leak from underneath the seal housing...

I agree, i finally think i know what is going on with this thing lol. I found the page in my online BGB, and i think its pretty straight forward now. I'll leave the retaining plate alone, and just pick out the old seal, and press in the new one

Thanks all :D

be carefull not to score the ally housing when prising out the seal or oil will seep past the oil seal. ;)

Good call, The BGB recommends scoring the seal with a razor, then using a tapped up flat head to pull it out.

cheers

Here's a fairly clear picture of this seal:

Also worth noting is that there are 2 bolts that extend up from the sump pan into the bottom of the plate that holds the seal...

Great picture, Thanks :D

So, if i were to redo the retaining plate seal, I'd have to unbolt the oil pan, and reseal the oil pan at the same time?

I haven't done it this way before so my best guess would be that you could leave the oil pan in place, just remove the bolts, undo the retaining plate bolts and then lever this free of the engine - due to the sealant between the plate and the oil pan.

Refitting would be where it could go wrong...sealant will need to be correctly applied between the base of the plate and the sump, note that if you get an oil leak from here it will require you either dropping the sump or pulling the gearbox - neither of which I'd be jumping for joy about!

I'd leave the plate alone and prise out the seal...

as chris said, just remove the 2 sump to ally housing bolts to remove the ally plate.

as long as you do a good clean-up of the old sealant and get the new sealant into the corners it won't leak.

i always remove the housings when i do rear main oil seals at work.

it's personnel preference really at the end of the day.

Good info, Thanks everyone. I'll be ready to tackel this now when the time comes :)

I'll just pry out the seal. The engine only has 60k km on it. And i dont see any leaks around the oil pan, just by looking at it.

Corey,

If you do this, any chance of a little write up and some pics?

Might be useful to someone else in the future :)
