Hello all,
wohoo finally a bit of sunshine.
anyhoos,
my MOT is due next week.
my question is this ( i have searched the forum)
underneath the passenger side, the brake line is slightly corroded. this has been a proviso on my MOT for about 4 years.

i am not sure what to do or where to go for brake Line/pipe (is it pipe or line)

can i replace this section???
or do i need to replace the whole lot??

i read about flared joins or wot not. so i think i will try and find a garage to do the fitting. I beleive you can buy the equipment but i think i will leave my brakes to a pro.

thanks all.

That might be a good idea to leave it to a pro. The ridged pipes on 185s are made from one piece from the flexi to the master cylinder. I had mine up on the ramp last year to look at the brake pipes and it looks like the Toyota robots make the complete pipe and fit it to the chassis before everything else is bolted on. Normally the flaring kit needs to be placed in a vice to so you can get the leverage but with a lot of ball ache you can just about flare the end in place. I was unfortunate to shear the end off one of my lines when trying to fit some braided lines.... Doh!

I'll have a look in my manual but from what I could see when I had it up in the air was the lines are 1 complete piece all the way but any good brake service place should be able to cut, fabricate and join sections for you. D

hello all,
my mot has passed again. woohooo.
the advisory's have become urgent now. which is brake line and fuel line.
he said the fuel line may clean up. but the brakes not so good.
from what dorris said shuld i just go to a brake specialist to get them both done. or are there any alternatives that you guys have used/recommend. thanks....

Congrats on the MOT :D

Regarding the brake lines The MOT testers can fail the rubber hoses if they are slightly perished. I'd advise replacing them with the OEM Mr. T rubber hoses as braided stainless lines can be a problem.

On the other hand, if its the actual hard lines that are corroded then I'd strongly advise getting them replaced by a brake specialist.

hi

I would just get a garage to cut out the corroded part then get some new unions and flare a new bit of pipe to fit you can do it yourself but I've never tried it and its probably a bit of an art to getting it right so it doesn't leak.

That’s good news on the MOT, if it is the flexi hose, for the cost of hoses you might as well up grade to steels like Don says. The worst part of this is getting the union undone at the top without shearing the end off the metal part of the pipe, I got a set of Goodridge off Ebay for about 40 quid. On the other hand if it is the metal pipes that are corroded like Mike has suggested get it to a specialist and get them to cut out the crap and fit new sections with new unions. Even though I have all the kit in work to do the job it still can be a right ball ache and very rarely do the new sections you make up fit first time, plus there is the cost of the brake fluid and the process of bleeding the system and then the cost of the kit over how many times you might make pipes up. Then again if you fancy the experience of making and flaring brake pipes then go for it, just remember to pump your pedal up and check for leaks once done. Dorris

LOL thanks guys.
i dont mind modding but potentially KILLING MYSELF . ME THINKS NOT.
IIRC. the secton is under the drivers side and it under some plastic covers i think.
if i could just get the sections replaced that would be most excellent. i tsake it from what youare all saying it is viable as oppose to replacing it all,.
thanks for your help boys.
is it applicable to both brake and fuel line??
thanks once again for your input.
m.
