Hey all, I desperately need to do an oil change this weekend as ive missed the regular 3k interval  and im driving to wales next week!!!!!
But what i want to ask is... Will the fully synthetic Mobil 1 stuff (15/50 maybe???) that halfords do be suitable enough for the ST205?? the car is pretty much standard apart from my nice new shiny Nur spec R  #

well, I ran my St185 on Mobil 1 15/50 as was high mileage. No problems reported. It is probably the best easy to locate oil according to numerous sources. There are however soem reported benefits to the ester based oils such as some of teh Silkolene and Millers? the 0W40 Mobil one has also been reported to kill engines as is too thin (only if the engine is highish mileage though) and this last comment is not GT4 related. You pays your money you takes your choice. |

I have done 10,000km on my car using mobil 1 0W40 and noticed it is using a lot of oil, a fair bit actually. My car has done 144,000km now and i will be trying something a little thicker, i never knew that oil was bad for the engine, thought the thin stuff might help it more. 
So id steer away from anything to thin. Will try out some Motul oil in 15W/50 this weekend.

After reading Oilman's post on the other side I thought that the consensus was that 0W40 is not "thin" First number is viscosity at 40c and second is viscosity at 100c I quote: Quote: 0w-40, 5w-40, 10w-40 and 15w-40 are all the same thickness (14cst) at 100degC.
It's just a question of whether they do the job well before the engine has warmed up. This is the thread. It taught me quite a lot. |

Indeed Paul, But such a thin oil at start up is the concern. It shoudl be fine when up to temp. |

It's a very personal thing I run mine on Silkolene 10W50 Pro S (the Toyota recommended viscocity range) But Millers etc will all do just as well Service intervals should also be a factor I change mine every 3k miles so I could probably get away with using chocolate syrup if the visccity was right lol ****EDIT******* Mobil 1 is fully synth. It's just not esther based |

I need to buy the oil in the morning guys, So will the mobil 1 stuff be suitable or not???????? It will only be in there until just after xmas when i'll put some proper good lube in there!!! lol Thanks, DAVE

Dave - that'll be fine, even though the cold oil temp is a bit thick... Have you consdiered the Shell Helix (Blue can) in the interim if you can't obtain the stuff you want? It comes in a 10W40 flavour |

Dave - all the Shell petrol garages I have been in sell this oil
It seems to be a pretty decent readily available oil, and has been thoroughly proven by our reside "Don"

I'd love to have a word with someone on the Shell lubricants team to see what the chat is with Helix. My father always badgers me to use it as he worked for Shell for 20 odd years and certainly Gemini used to be a very good performance oil but their performance marketing has all but died in recent years. End of the day, as that Dave Walker bloke from CCC and now Practical Performance car has stated, regular changes are more important than the highest possible quality of blend. |
