I have read that the St205 uses a hard plastic type sugar cube and is not prone to wear like the metal ST185 items. Can anyone confirm this?

Having looked at a few St205s it seems that not all actually have a "sugar cube" in the linkage.

Has anyone actually changed one of these as a friend seems to have excessive play in this area and the car still crunches in to gear after changing gear box fluid & clutch fluid.

I am thinking that new sugar cube & checking clutch adjustment is second stage works - hopefully it is not syncros - any thoughts?

oh - sugar cube write up here:-

the 205 box does indeed have a plastic sugar cube jp.

it's more of a slider than the 185 metal sugar cube though.

if you look at the 2 linkages where they meet, the cube is in there

looks very similar to this...you can see the cube on the end to the right

I seem to remember that there are 2 kinds of "sugar cube", one is square and the other is a round design?

once you start snagging bulk rings, thus causing the edges to be beating on syncro's, gear changing will only get worse.. tis the nature of the beast and a costly one to sort...

does not matter whether round or square its just used to change direction of movement, the 205 and 185 are very similar , 205 is lighter and better..

road muck, cause of abrasive damage to most moving parts.., not seen one 185, 205 without some kind of wear, easy to sort., well worth sorting makes for much more positive action.

Give it a little time on teh new oil before despairing

I found it took a few drives for new oil to make a real difference in the box

The black car slowly transitioned from a notchy barely achievable high rpm gear change to mostly OK over a month or so

I have no idea why it's like this but that's how mine worked. I have visions of contaminated synchros slowly cleaning off with nice new oil but that's probably just horseapples :D

tis easy to sort, simple job change cube, make good bracket..where bolt wears oval..

or replace the arm with a shortened rose linkage counterpart, using dual bearing race for sugar cube either way simple....
