Picked up an engien that had been been in a car when it was driven through a ford (river type thing not a fiesta :-) )

Initial inspection showed that there was something rather amiss with the piston orientation and height compared to the others.

Spent a coupel of hours stripping stuff down to see what had happened to be confronted by this:-

Suprisingly teh bearing seemed relatively unscathed

Unfortunately the block did not get away so lightly - the pictures are taken form the bottom of the engine looking up where the rod would have been thrashing about:-

Wow - is that damage to the block going to write it off? Given that the damage is probably in part of the area not swept by the piston?

Will put these pics in the 'hall of horrors'.

I suspect block is dead, the piston skirts actually come down past teh bottom of the cylinder on full down stroke. I will check tonight to see if the cylinder has any nasty dents/scratched in it from flailing con-rod half!

The head is fine Don which is what I bought it for as it is a late 9 stud not the earlier 7 stud ST185. It is essentially a complete engine with manifold throttle body, injectors etc etc so is handy for mocking stuff up with fuel rail and manifolds/turbo.

I wanted to strip down an engine anyway just to see where all the bits go and how they come off - the dead block was essentially free.

After closer inspection last night the block is definitely dead - some rather large chunks taken out of the cylinder from flailing half a rod.

TBH I would not be happy using teh crank considering the stress it must have been placed under - shame as the engien looks to have been in bloody good condition prior to the rod breaking - bores have no lip, all bearings are as they should be, new clutch & cam belt.

Not sure if DJ wants a ST185 block to chop up but will PM him.
