I'm having knock sensor problems at the moment.

I would like to know how people have been repairing the wiring.

I understand that you can get a screened cable from Maplins for a few quid.

I dont have the kit to join the wires correctly into the multi plugs,

so would it be ok just to cut and solder the wires close to the ECU plug?

What sort of problems you got there mate.

Most of the pins in any multi plug are not hard to get out with a little care and time.
you could solder them but it would have to be a pukka job not that mister whippey stuff i have seen on some joints.

Kelt - yes the KS wiring is screened. Note that the screen is only connected to earth at one end.

Yes you could solder the wire at the plugs to the original wiring, providing this is done to a decent standard.

Even better is to with draw the pin, uncrimp the wire and then either re-crimp or solder onto the pin.

The best way would be to install new pins, but we know how easy it is to find the correct size and shape pin don't we!

Before I considered snipping any wires I would meter out both the signal wire and the screen to see if that was the problem...

What is your problem anyhow? Code 52?

Yes code 52.

lost boost, well no it retards the ignition or fuel i think.

so i have been driving with out going into boost, its grim.

tomorrow i will check the continuity of the wiring, i have found it kinked by the inlet manifold.

But i think its more likely to be the sensor cause the engine management light is constantly on rather than intermitant.

I re-set the ecu but the light comes straight back on as soon as you pull away.

I hope it is the wiring it will be cheaper.

I am good at soldering, so if that will be ok i will do that.

i will try and fit the pins properly by the sensor plug and solder the ends by the ecu.

cant wait to check it out tomorrow. wish i had a garage.

thanks for your help.

From my experience it is normally related to the Knock Sensor itself, rather than the wiring, although this can go bad...

Also, check so ensure that the KS is bolted up against the block firmly

A knock sensor is made from peizo crystal so it needs to be pulled down to the correct torque.

The amount of compression on the crystal makes it work at the correct frequency too tight or too lose will make it not work correctly.

Hope this helps

So what's the torque?

45 Nm i think.

there isn't much room behind there,

what do people use a 1/4 drive torque wrench for it?

Yes, a smaller torque wrench will fit with a little persuasion :)

Thanks for everyones advice.

Its so nice having boost back again it wasn't the wiring. just the sensor.

I had to get some serious wobbly joints and extensions conected so i could connect the torque wrench up.

I got access to a ramp, made it so easy, job done in half an hour.

Thats got to be the most expensive sensor i have bought for a car £150 including VAT and delivery.

Anyone intending to change their knock sensor will need a 27mm deep socket and a few universal joints and a short armed torque wrench.
