Before I bought my car I ran a diags checked and picked up a 54 error code (intercooler). we checked the car over and it seemed ok. I reset the ecu. However 3 days later this morning I saw the engine light come on for about 10 seconds before it went off again. Does this mean there is an error or would the engine light stay on if there was an error?
I'm thinking it'd probably be the same error code again but as yet I have not looked again. I'm hoping the car is ok to drive still (trying not to use the turbo).

Any advise?

Cheers

Steve

It's likely that its the same error code returned. Rather than just resetting the ECU, top up the fluid in the top box aswell. The should fix your problem.

Thanks matey. The fluid was there (almost to the bottom of the cap) when I opened the intercooler...green in colour too. Not sure if it has an air block perhaps. :?
As a newbie can anyone advise what kind of fluid I need to put into the intercooler and where I can buy it from.

Thanks for your help.

Steve

Steve - Toyota supply red and green coolant, perhaps you have their green stuff, but it would be a long shot to definitely say that.

I would be looking at toppping up the IC with some de-ionised water for the time being.

I'm a bit weird and I'll only run red stuff in our cars so I would change out the IC fluid to something I knew was in there and that I know is ok

I don't think you're weird Kris  .... I too use Toyota Red coolant in my engine AND intercooler. I made the mistake some years ago of using a water/anti-freeze mix in my engine and now regret my decision as there's signs of corrosion in the coolant.

Fensport also list the Toyota red coolant on their web site www.fensport.co.uk if you have trouble getting hold of it from your local Toyota dealer.

Can I add as a slight aside, I've recently used my local Lexus dealership to get red Forlife. It worked out as being £17.xx from the Lexus garage round the corner from work or £13.00 + VAT + Carriage from Fennies. Basically concluded it was easier to just get some from the Lexus garage and their service was great. Same company, different brand, different customer care values!

I did a diags check at lunch today and it was a 54 error code again.

As I'm completely new to turbo's I'm not sure where I would drain the coolant from the intercooler, what it's capacity is and how to fill it.....(as in, is there more to it than opening the cap and poring it in?
I have not yet read my owners manual. I guess that will help...
So the coolant in the intercooler is the same as the radiator then.....cool.
If I can change the coolant on a mk1 MR2 with 17 billion draining points then this cant be too bad...

The intercooler system consist of the IC itself, some pipework, a water pump and a cooling radiator mounted at the front of the car, (in front of the engine cooling rad and the aircon rad)

If my memory serves me correctly there is a drain plug on the end bottom of the IC radiator.

Surprisingly not! Drain, refill with engine running, blip the throttle now and again and keep filling it up. Check the level again in a few days as the level may well drop a little as some trapped air escapes from within the system.

Yep, done that job before too!
This is a walk in the park compared to that palaver!

Can I just ask about the coolant?

What happens if water and antifreeze mix is used?

Does the engine contain a high level of magnesium or some thing similar?

My head is off at the mo and in the block and T-stat area there is some white like fluffy sh1t like sugar.

I think the last owner use ford antifreeze and was wondering if that may have cause the quick failure of the new head gasket he had done?

I have taken apart parts which have been running the recommended Toyota Red coolant and they have been fine.

I have taken apart stuff which has not been running Red coolant and it has not been fine i.e. badly corroded, white deopsits etc

Red coolant when it has been dribbling as a v slow leak starts to form crystals/powder similar to as you descibe.

Again, until I see or know better, I would only use the Toyota red coolant, for fear of items corroding. Maybe your gasket suffered as a direct result of an incompatible coolant?

that is what i was thinking.

i think i need to get the block flushed out before i put Toyota Red coolant in it.

I will be replacing the water pump and so on as i believe that even if it looks good it is better to replace whiles apart any thing that is likely to drop you in the POO later.
