Got in the car this AM and with the car stationary I turned the steering wheel each way and got a crunching type sound.......not noticed this before...... anyhoo...as I reversed to pull away and put the steering on full lock it didn't make any crunching noise and just the usual sound of the PS pump working....same when I turned it full lock the other way.....
I have not yet done obvious checks like check the tightness of the wheels bolts so I'll do that today in my lunchbreak....any ideas what it may be? :? arb bushes perhaps? tie rods?

Cheers

Steve

I have now checked the wheel bolts and they are nice and tight. The car passed and MOT at the end of October...surely any damaged / badly worn bushes would have been spotted? :?

Lol.....no wind up me...if that was the case then you'd notice it in the cars handling. The car handles fine indeed.

I work for a business systems support company. It's my job to send out engineers to companies such as Barclays Bank to fix their problematic hardware/software. We do work for Dell, Whsmith and numerous other companies. It's stressful and demanding......thats why I'm looking for another new job.

Yep I have the st185.....st205 was way over my budget......

Have you any suggestions for my crunching sound? Although having said that it appears to have gone now... :? will it come back again? I'll know later............

hi again steve<
does your car make the noise only when you turn your wheell stationary?

does it shake quite bad like its wont let you turn.

Hopefully not, but i had this, the car was fine when driving but at stationary (intermitantly iirc) the wheel had a thrombie.

took it to my man and he eventually said that one of the bolts to the power steering motor/pump had snapped or cracked or something anyhoo he replaced it and it ok.
but if it is this make sure you get your belt changed or at least checked. in case of the obvious things that happen to belts in this situation.obviously

make sure your power steering fluid is topped right up. My 182 done the same thing. I checked the level which seemed ok, as days passed the crunch got louder, then I poured fluid in until I could see it over the max mark. Never heard a peep from it after that point.

Worth checking, common complaint from new 185 owners.

Cheers,

tone

It appears to have gone....however I'll be giving the car a good checkover tomorrow.
It may even be worth getting the fluid drain and refilled. I don't know how long it's been in there.
