So you have installed a new distributor, rotor or you just think that the car has been incorrectly timed before (Quite likely unless they knew what to do!) Heres a quick "How To" for any newbie.

Tools :- Piece of small gauge wire with bare ends and approx 50mm long (or paperclip!) (Must be conductive), Strobe light style timing gun.

Prior to proceeding warm up vehicle to normal operating temperature.

1) Locate "Engine Diagnostic Socket" this is located under the bonnet, on the passenger side, near the bulkhead and bonnet hinge. Open up the cover on the socket, Each terminal within is labelled in the lid of the socket you have just opened. Locate Terminals TE1 & E1.
2) Insert the bare (stripped back to metal) ends of the wire into the terminals TE1 & E1.
3) Insert Keys into ignition. To check you have connected the wire properly turn the key to the ignition on position - (secong stage just before the starter motor engagement position)- If you have correctly connected the wire the "check engine light" will flash. Turn off ignition once you are happy it is correctly connected.
4) Attach strobe timing gun to cylinder 1 HT lead (the far left one when viewing the car from the front). Attach the +ve & -ve power leads for the strobe gun to the battery.
5) Locate the timing marks on the Lower cam belt cover (LHS of engine when viewing from the front of the car) The crank pulley (lower alternator belt pulley) has a notch cut into it to indicate the basic dynamic timing.
6) Start vehicle whilst double checking you still have a good contact between the check engine pins (see stage 3).
7) Aim strobe gun at the timing marks on the pulley, the notch in the pulley should align with the markings on teh lower cambelt cover showing 10 deg. BASE TIMING SHOULD BE SET TO 10 DEGREES BTDC.

If the timing does not align with the 10 deg BTDC mark on the lower cam cover you will need to undo the two bolts holding the distributor in position and rotate the distributor until the marks align.

Once completed Re-tighten the two bolts on the distributor to 39Nm (29 ft lbf) and re-check timing again to ensure the distributor has not moved in the process or re-tightening. REMOVE THE PIECE OF WIRE BEFORE YOU DRIVE OFF!

heh m8, no problem at all. You will not be the only one asking the question :-)

IMHO buy a timing gun and have a go whilst dad is watching/instructing. Timing guns are circa £30 so about teh same a garage will charge you and you will know it is done right if you do it yourself :-)
