Ok guy’s (& gal's) I am going to do my first service on the ST205, & I haven’t an English manual in site to help me out with these easy questions!!

Anyone know how much coolant I need to put in from empty & the same question for engine oil??

I have ordered 5 litres of Millers 10w-40 fully synth engine oil & 5 litres of Toyota forlife coolant, is this enough?? Are they the correct items??

Cheers guy’s (& gal's), stupid questions for a stupid person I know

According to my UK Manual the coolant capacity is 7.0 litres. However when I have done a coolant change in the past the most I have got in was around 6.0 litres.

You will find that when you drain the radiator you will only get circa 4.5 litres out - the rest you need to remove by either removing the drain plug on the engine (no idea where this is) or what I did was to remove the housing for the thermostat slightly to allow more fluid to drain.

Alternatively you could warm the car right up to hot then drain the fluid as the thermostat would be open - but you might burn/scald yourself on the hot parts and fluid.

Oil should be plenty.

Cheers :)

Heh - just telling what the manual says :)

I for one would never change the oil without also doing the filter.

Krude - I would steer clear of the engine drain plug, it's a right git to get at, and if you did and heaven forbid it leaked afterwards you would be cursing yourself for being so clever!

As Mike says, a radiator drain, thermostat removal and a blow through the top hose will drain the majority of the coolant.

If you are fitting a huge Koyo then you might want to get even more coolant?

I'm running Silkolene 75/90 synthetic diff oil

No issues with it

Rear diff can be filled on your own no problems

The rear diff is obvious. There's a filler on the rear plate and a drain on the bottom. One point of note:- the filler plug on the rear is in the middle of the diff bush and is hard to see. it has two bolt head sizes on it so pick the largest one. Possibly 17 or 19 although I forget which.

The G/B and Front transfer share their oil but have two drains, one on the bottom of the GB and one on the bottom of the transfer. Both are obvious from underneath
The filler, common to both transfer and GB is midway up the GB and again pretty obvious from below

Both diff and GB/Transfer are a pita to fill up. Make sure you get bottles with inbuilt pouring tubes (most have). The rear diff is best filled from under the car by holding the oil bottle upside down behind the diff

GB/Transfer can be filled either from below or by feeding a pipe down from the top of the engine. I did it from below using handy hint below

Handy hint #3237564321
Gear oil is thick gloopy stuff and hard to work with. Sticking it in the microwave until luke warm means it flows more like engine oil.

I use Millers CRX 75w90 in my gearbox and Castrol Hypoid EP90 in my rear differential. This is exactly what the book specifies.

Gear Oil really really stinks, it almost made me puke last time I did the change.

Access to the rear diff fill can be a pain, might be worth investing in a oil pump (looks like a big bicycle pump).

Also one point to bear in mind is that the fill and drain plugs can be 'very' tight. Make sure you can get the fill plug undone BEFORE you remove the drain plug and remove the oil.

Cheers, :)

Rear of diff...
Image

Note what looks like 2 different sized points at which to undo the filler plug....only the larger one should be used.

Snap, got one at Christmas :P

Ok so roughly to do the Diff & G/B I need to purchase 7 litres (1.1 for the Diff & 5.2 for the G/B + a gasmask  )??

Kris, looking at your pics is like playing "where’s Wally", except it’s where's the NGK spark plug or spark plug box, just look through the pics on your site to see what I mean

Cheers for the help guy's, much appreciated.

when doing rear diff. i have been advised to fill the diff, run it then drain andfill again to remove thecrap is this necesary. what he actually told me to do was lift andrun it stationary. bit hard with 4wd.

will there be a worldof difference out of interest. as its probably never beendonesince new. (curse this crappy space bar)

i dont want to hijack thread. hopefully answers beneficialto all

for £76.93 could i get a garage to do it or would you all advise against. dont want them to put whatever they think would do in it.

thanks
