**Moderated by Loosey - changed name of post to be more descriptive**

Im doing a coolant chnge.
I have bled the radiator via the little butterfly valve.
I cannot get access to the thermostat at all.
I have removed the rubber pipe that goes to the thermostat housing but thats all.
Coolant has trickled out of it and has now stopped.

I went to flush up via the engine coolant cap and it simply filled up to the neck with about 1 litre of water.....the level wont go down and nothing is coimng out of any holes now.......please help me asap....my car is stranded otherwise.

What can I do??????

Cheers

Steve

Er,

When you say engine coolant cap you do mean the one on top of the radiator, not the little plastic cap to the right as you look at it?

Steve b - remove the thermostat housing as per the picture I posted in the other coolant thread, or you will not be able to drain the block efficiently

Sorry but I'm not too good with alternators and I need to remove it.

How can I undo it so I can avoid the below problem I had trying to re-locate the stud.

As it happens I removed the thermostat and housing and some fluid did come out.
I had to physically suck out the water from the expansion tank (horrible).

Problem.

I have lost one of the thermostat housing studs and nuts......I simply cannot find it anywhere so it's lost in the engine bay....I have had to order another stud with nuts....(plus a spare just incase).
So one stud is in. I have connected up all the hoses again and have filled up what coolant I can. All I need to do is fit the stud, fit the oil filter back on and then top up the fluids.

This is the worst job I have done on a car....Laughing

Right, I have done all I can do now until I collect the studs and nuts tomorrow. Once the stud and nut is fitted I simply need to check the coolant levels in the rad. and the expansion tank and test and top up if needed.

I know now that looking at what I have gone through today (about 5 hours work), that I could do it from start to finish in about 1 hour......which isn't bad for me.
So, I think tomorrow, if I get the time, I may well do a write up suggesting my method (the quick one that is  ).

I plan to do the IC coolant tomorrow too, I just hope the studs and nuts arrive on time at Mr.T  ....
The car is stranded outside my house tonight.

Steve - glad you seem to have it weighed off now :)

You'll be pleased to know that the IC fluid is easier to change

You are correct in assuming that you just start the car and keep topping up the fluid level. Oce things start to get warm/hot stick the cap back on and make sure that the fans come on and go off.

Once the car has cooled down, check the fluid again to ensure the level is correct.

All sorted.....so far so good.
No leaks, have been doing regular fluid level checks. Radiator and expansion tank are fine. Thermostat not leaking. IC level needed topping up frequently and I'll be checking that for the next few goes before using the car....as well as checking for any other leaks.

Phew....I even had to cycle 12 miles to collect the stud and nut I needed so I got some worthy exercise too.

Car drives super smooth and quiet.

I'm please now......and I even washed the car today....but then it was so dirty that it still needs another wash.... might do that in the morning before shopping.

I'll find some time this weekend to do a write up on the IC and coolant fluid changes....I have a few pics (not for the IC though as that's easy peasy) so I'll choose some suitable words to accompany the pics.

Steve

p.s. I have nics and cuts on my hands and wrists, my back aches from all the stooping over the car....but I'm happy.

I can't believe how smooth the car is. nealry 14 years old and it goes sooooo well. I'm very pleased with it indeed.

Well done Steve :D

Look forward to seeing your write up on, hopefully both the IC and Engine Coolant for a CS :D

Stevo is right, it's almost a perversion conducting DIY GT4 maintenance!

Ah yes, the joys of a stat change...!!!!!
first one always takes much longer than you think it will (as with most jobs on the four!)
still once you have done it, you will be doing more and more diy as time goes by...

I haven't yet forgotten about the write up. I lost the pics I took on my PC a month ago and so it means going out to take some more.....that won't be hard.....it's just getting the time....as it's winter it's going to work and coming home from work in the dark still. :(
I'll also do the IC fluid change write up too......and.......I'll be changing the Backbox soon so I'll do a write up on my fun doing that.

Steve - look forward to the article! You can always e-mail this to kris@gt4dc.co.uk if the PM and picture thing is a bit awkward?
