I’ve already have a block and set of JE Pistons to match and Santa brought me a set of eagle rods for Xmas plus all the bits and pieces I’ve been collecting over the last few years.
My plan is to use the CS crank then measure and match everything to the new block using ARP hard wear. The head will get a quick refurbish as that hasn’t done to many miles since the last rebuild, I’m really looking forward to doing this rebuild especially as its not just the engine but the suspension and brakes are going to get fully up rated too but my plan is not to change the aesthetics of the car to much i.e. when you lift the bonnet it will still look like a CS engine. No doubt as I go on I will be occasionally picking all your brain etc. Dorris

No Don that’s just one piston, piston number 3 which just happens to be the same big end that failed last time, I'm just wondering now how long the lands have been failing.
Apart from my driving is there any other reason why this might of happened??? D

Would be good if you could post a photo of the top of the piston, so we can see signs of det.

Is there a small build up of carnon on top of the piston?

Can you see if there is pitting on the surface of the piston? You may have to scrub off the carbon to get a better look?

It might just be my Saturday morning(ish) after eyes but all the sharp edges look damaged. Looks to me like either det or possibly high in cylinder temps almost melting it

The picture doesn’t show it but the piston is very wet but then again I suppose that is to be expected considering the damage to the lands and ring.
I have cleaned the piston since (see below) and haven’t noticed anything obvious but as for the sharp edges, I’ve no idea what the original Mr T pistons should look like but then again these are the original 150K+ miles pistons and who know what the mechanical retard who had it before me did to it, I have noticed what looks like some wear on the edges to the valve pockets though.
When I first got the car it had a very home made boost controller which looked like it had been made from some old boiler parts plus the water pump had failed so that’s not a good combination and then the car over heated when the HG blew on me so its not had the best of childhoods.
On a good note the new block is all good and ready to go and all matched to each individual piston.
For those of you that don’t know I bought the block and matching JE pistons a few years ago, the guy had the engine rebuilt with the pistons and not long after the big ends went and being well *bleep* off he decided to just swap the engine and sell what was left, as it happens its in much better condition then my CS block especially around the water galleries. I got it in work and chemically cleaned it, checked the surface and then give it a coat of black Hammerite.
The bores did show some slight signs of polishing towards the bottoms but bores 3 and 4 had some vertical scorings, lucky for me who ever bored it out didn’t take out to what JE specifies and all the clearances where way to small.
I have now honed the bores to the minimal measurements that JE specify, however I had to go out an extra .001” on number four to remove the score.
I am very happy at the end result and what with the piston and rods all matched I’ve now got four equal weights of 1048g of piston and rod combined across the crank so expecting it to feel much smoother.
Next will be to get the remains of the CS lump and get the crank out. Dorris

The pic of the first piston crown certainly looks like det to me with the pock marked surface.

Your refurbed block looks nice :) if the rest of your build is like that then your Four is in for a real treat.
