Journals look a bit blue or is it my imagination?

How do the bearing caps look?

No the journals aren’t blue that’s just the reflection; the caps look ok too cant see anything out the ordinary with them. I’ve got all the bits to rebuild the bottom end now, just need to find time to do it. I also picked up a barging today, new ARP head stud kit for a ton so me is happy lol. Dorris

This is what eventually happens with a cracked journal...

Out of interest were you running an alloy crank pulley, Dorris?

No Jon I was running a standard pulley, in the thread you have put up you can see the cracks go diagonally across the journal, which indicates to me an imbalance within the crank, which has probably caused the harmonics or resonance. I’ve seen what that can do to aircraft engines or helicopters and its not nice but he did do a grand job I have to admit. Dorris

You should run the stock crank pulley/dampener - it's there for a reason and help reduce crank shaft vibrations/waves.

Whether this contributed to failure on the MR2 article linked up there ^ is a debatable point, especially as the guy had it on since 2004, but hey, wonder how many miles he covered?

OK peeps I’ve sized up the new big end journals and if my maths is right it looks like standard sizes so on that note I was just wondering what peoples views are on ACL bearings over Toyota? Dorris

The concensus seems to be to stick with Toyota unless you have something special in mind for your build.

ACL etc seem to have a harder coating so if they go due to oil loss etc they will prob take out the crank also.

Also no ones really sure on the life of ACL either where Toyota have a proven record of 100k's miles with good oil and handle basically any power put at them....

I think you can say that has answered that debate, just need someone to confirm the sizes I need before I go handing over loads of dosh to Mr T again.
Another addition to the build is a 9-stud manifold just to keep things a little more reliable however the gasket is going to cost more then the manifold. I have a bit of helicoiling to do to the head, the far right exhaust stud that normally fails hence why I’ve decided to go for the 9-stud option.
I’m still waiting for the guy to post the clutch its been 2 ½ weeks so getting a little *bleep* off now but at least I have the head to be keeping me busy. Stay tuned for a bit more progress as i'm now back home. TTFN Dorris

ACL from my understanding are more suited to race applications and regular strip downs.

Whilst you have the second one covered it seems from past experience I am sure that isn't the actual plan ;-)

More good news and bad new again!
The good news is the clutch kit finally turned up as described alone with a very good condition 9-stud manifold so the day of the engine and transmission going back in is getting closer.
The bad news is I got back home Friday night to find someone had driven down the passenger side of the 182 from the rear wheel arch to the front with the door mirror folded back on its self, no dents but the scratches travel down the full length and are about a foot wide, on a good note they don’t look too deep and look like they might polish out.
It doesn’t stop there though, I was away for a few months last year when my SORN certificate ran out for the CS and I’ve gone and picked up a bit of a fine, more of my money to the treasury :( I know GT4s are pricey to run but whilst it is up on axle stands isn’t quiet what I had in mind. Dorris

Went to MR T and ordered my big ends yesterday, not to bad a shock, £83 which is about right what with the rise in VAT and everything else going up since I last bought some. If I’m lucky they might be here before the weekend but what with the hols its looking like I’m going to have to wait until next week. I’ve still got the head to be getting on with, will get some pictures up as I go and if I finish that in time then I'll just chill in the paddling pool and enjoy a beer or two and enjoy the sun. Dorris
