Yeah on my old 205 lump I used some angle-grinder shaped lovin' to carry out some precison engineering on the sump to allow the ARP studs to fit.

Dorris, it appears that you have reused the old flywheel? Have you had it skimmed to ensure it's dead flat? I think using an old un-machined wheel is a bit risky with a new clutch disc.

Dorris - I cut down the ARP studs so that you can just turn them with a fraction of the allen key thread is left, and then cut grooves into the sump - all on a 205.

Think you might be looking at welded in sections on the 185 sump...

The studs protrude proud of the base of the block...

Dipstick! What am I missing and has anyone got a picture of what is supposed to be here and what it looks like? I'm making a guess this is a rev 3 block? Dorris

Dorris, you are only missing an o-ring, (as long as you still have the disptick tube!) :)

The dipstick tube simply pushes into this hole along with its associated o-ring :)

Is this the cheapest replacement part you have bought so far? :P

This is how it came with no tube or stick so was wondering what I need to be looking for as its different to what’s on the 185 block. So am I right in thinking this is a rev 3 bottom end then? Dorris

I believe the rev 3 did have the dipstick as you & Kris described.

did you get the oil cooler or sump with the block?

Your pics
Image
looks like rev 3 oil cooler (will not take an oil filter)

Image
doesn't look like your block has the rev 2 water pipe on the back of the block.

The water pipe I removed for painting and its now back in place, I’ll get better pictures of both sides of the block, hopefully I’ll get sometime tomorrow to get the top end built up too. The dipstick is what is confusing me; the block was a 3sgte out of an Mr2. All that came with it was the mains caps and pistons. Dorris

Thanks mate that is just what I’ve been looking for and I can confirm that the block I got is from a later model, from what I can see the only difference between the two is the dipstick tube. Now I know what it looks like I’ve managed to find one and it will be with me shortly, another small problem resolved! Dorris

Dorris,
IIRC swapping from a SDT185 to a ST205 block is not as simple as just changing the dipstick.

As the oil cooler is different the block is plumbed different to accomodate it and the revised sump and filter location. Hence if it really is a rev 3 block you will be better off (i believe) swapping to a rev 3 oil pump, sump, oil cooler etc etc.

ST205 oil pump on bottom of block
Image

Yours - (note no oil pump connections on the bottom for the filter and the shape is totally different)
Image
I would also check the crank oil seal plate on the opposite end of the block as IIRC this is drilled to accept the sump on ST205 and is not in the ST185.
Image
thanks to skinnybinlid & datajon for the pic.

If you look under the thermostat housing the ST205 has a pipe on the block that isn't there on the ST185.
Image

As such you relaly need to confirm 100% that the block is rev 3/ST205 and then IMHO I would follow the path of least resistance and buy all rev 3 oil pumps, sumps, oil coolers etc etc.

You will still have some buggeration with turbo hoses etc but much easier than trying to convert your block to rev 2 status I woudl think.

I only know of people converting a rev 2 to use a rev 3 sump

Another givaway is that the turbo oil feed banjo is much smaller on the rev 3 so you will need an st205 oil feed pipe & banjo.

JP, I was going to ask about different oilways, but is it just the case that the intake and filter ports are all contained within the pump. i.e. will a 185 pump bolt on and pick up oil from the sump and pump into the block opilway the same where it will pass through the cooler & 185 filter the same ?

Water plumbing is slightly different but again hopefully 185 bits can bolt on and work as per 185 if you plug the extra hole on the 205 block.

I think the issue is the water?
From what I can recall the pipe on the block on teh rev 3 is the oil drain pipe from teh catch can (i.e. is oil)

The pipe on the rear of the ST185 block is water.

The pipe on the front of the rev3/st205 block shown near the oiler cooler is water I believe and enters back in to the water system after the thermostat as opposed to the ST185 where it enters before the thermostat.

I will be honest and I really don;t know enough to provide a conclusive answer to what is best to do but I know enough that it is a large can of wriggle things.

The issue I see at present is that Dorris has a miss-match of rev 2 & rev 3 components for oil and water.

Looking at my pictures (and checking on my 185 engine) -

Rev3 - high pressure water comes from hole in front of block, through cooler and back into low pressure pump inlet pipe.

Rev2 - High pressure water comes from hole in back of block (main flow restrictions are head gasket and rad/bypass pipes so all block is high pressure) feeds via 3rd hardpipe to cooler and then back in to the low pressure pump intake.

The hole on the back of the rev3 (head not block) is indeed oil return from catch can.

It would seem logical to me to plumb as per 185 but take the pressure water from the hole in the front of the block instead. All the other water plumbing (turbo, heater etc.) should run no problems.

Running with 205 ancillaries and plumbing will open a whole new load of issues as the head elbows are completely different (different ports, sensors and head fitting so can't be swapped)

This will all need careful checking that the outlets from water and oil pumps line up with the ports in the block.
