Anyone have any thoughts about what might have caused this to happen

I'm guessing it's got to be heat related and perhaps the grooved discs have just sheared off a large lump or something

Still on the bright side I think I found the cause of my clicking, grinding brake noise. Some of the missing lump was still floating around in the void

Pads still show 5-6mm of thickness so are approx 50% worn. Not shot I'd say and no sign of any other damage on either friction surface

Confused of Bournemouth

I've seen something similar but thats a HUGE chunk thats been pulled off

If it was heat related then you'd expect to see discoloration of the pad and backing plate. That's what I occasionally experience with my Elise pads.

I recall you saying you had experienced excessive pad wear. At the risk of stating the obvious are you sure the pistons are moving free in the calipers and the pads are free to move in the calipers? I find the build-up of brake dust crud needs to be cleaned off the calipers on a regular basis to ensure the pads are still free to move.

Pad wear is not quite as bad as I thought.

Previous estimates were based on peering through the wheel but when stripped down it would appear that it's not as bad as I feared. All pads heve 5-6mm remaining so it's about half way

I've done 8k miles plus a couple of trackdays since fitting. It's still heavy compared to stock but then I expected that

My old man said he has seen this before & it looks like heat expansion, although he did say that you have a heat expansion slot in the pad so that shouldn’t really happen & if it was heat expansion related he would expect cracks on both sides of the slot...
LOL     he’s just argued himself out of the point he was making… LOL
What a laugh.

Still I will put this up as it sort of gives an option.

In the picture on the right hand side section of the pad, are those vertical silver lines a product of your digi camera, or are they scores on your actual pad??

They are very light scores from where I pulled the pads out of the calipers

Say cheers to your old man for me....I think

What pads were they Steve?

Sticking pots in the calliper aren't that rare...

Has the disk worn evenly? i.e. both side of the side look/measure the same? Mine wore badly on one side with a duff piston :(

They're TRD street

So disks are evenly worn and calipers are fine. Although I did find a damaged seal in the OSF (pic was NSF outer pad) caliper this afternoon so that's going to be coming off again for a refurb. Might as well do both sides since Brakes Intl. won't let you order 1x seal kit lol

Steve - I would order the front kit from Toyota...the front kit by Brakes Int has a snag with the dust covers ;)

Just for you Mr.P:
Front Brake Cylinder Kit Part No. 04479-20220

Be advised the dust seals are like choccy teapots and are VERY easy to tear when inserting the pads.

Steve, try 04479-20220 ~£36

Inspect the pistons very carefully for any corrosion on the surface where the seal sits against.

I had to replace 3 pistons due to pittings/corrosion.

Toyota are your cheapest place for pistons ~£10 each
