Hmm, this one has me stumped .......

There's a metallic rumble emanating from the rear (as far as I can tell). Having spent a couple of days stripping brakes front and rear including handbrake I can say it's not them

It is speed related but oddly it only happens when the car is hot and even then it seems to take a good blast to provoke it.

The noise itself is like a rusty brake disc grinding but there is a slight click that goes with it as well. The car is not pulling up unduly like something binding

The other annoying thing is that I can't replicate it. I parked the car up this eve, had a jack under it within two minutes and discovered that rotating all four wheels would not create the same noise

This leads me to one of a few conclusions:-
1) It's something suspension related fouling only under compression
2) It's prop related
3) My long whining rear diff has now gone BABOOM :(
4) Failed wheel bearing
5) Failed rear CV?

I'm guessing 5) is unlikely. I can't see how 2) and 4) could not make a noise from the get go. In my experience sheel bearings tend to rumble all the time. There's no sign of play

Anyone else got any ideas?

Steve,

Humm tricky one, only happens when it is warm you say, and takes some going to get it to the point it makes noise . . .

I would guess that it could be narrowed down to diff or prop, most of the others would display noises all the time i think.

I would put my best guess on the diff, shame you can't easily swap it to test.

Noises are the worst things as they are notoriously difficult to explain and find!

We diagnosed the 'rumble' on my 205 eventually by running the car whilst it was on the ramps, but even with a stethescope it was blooming hard to pin point the noise!

Good luck!

Steve,

I'd go for the cheap option first - wobble the rear wheels and see if a bearing has expired.

As Loosey says above her rumble was a right git to diagnose. WIth my head next to the wheel and the car on a ramp doing ~40mph in gear I could only JUST narrow the noise down to the front right CV joint!

Seems pretty rare for a rear CV joint to pack up, front yes, but rear no...

Are any of your rear CV boots split?

i had noise from the rear which turned out to be the tyres.. i was sure it was the wheel bearings...

I'd drain the diff oil and inspect for metal frags. The replacement drain plugs I got from Mr. T have a magnetised core although Kris reckoned his diff didn't have that. If you're in luck and have a magnet plug then this should reveal any probs with the diff.

Only other thing is have you changed anything recently at the rear of the car? Sometimes you can 'disturb' things so that they foul.

Failing all that then its copy Carter time and get it up on a car lift and try and simulate driving conditions.

Kerplink!

Anyone got a part number for the NS rear wheel bearing

It let go ( I assume ) during today's testing

I've now got 1/8" movement in the wheel

Anyone also got a good how to/any special tools required?

Steve - there is a guide on how to replace this on www.gtfours.co.uk with the relevant Blueprint part number for the bearing...

HTH :)

(Glad you have found the inexpensive problem!)

Cheers Kris

You're a star!

Luckily I even have a proper bearing remover (and several angle grinders just in case lol )

Glad you've apparently found the cause of the noise. I wonder why the bearing failed?

Steve - even with bearing removers I found the bearing casing v difficult to remove.

I have managed to remove this before but the last time I had to cut the little tinker off from the stub shaft

Watch out not to get any crap in the bearing when you fit it all back together, it's easily done...

Have you done the rear trailing arm bushes yet? Would be an ideal time to do it with the hub removed ;)

Don - general wear and tear I suspect?

Not sure on the reason for failure. I suspect general wear too but did notice a honking gurt chunk of rin damage which suggests a FOD incident too. Can't say I remember it

TLA? What's that Don LOL

Kris,
Do you have a part no for the BluePrint bearing
I've just had a right carry on with Kermit and his sidekick Fozzy at the local Camberly Auto Factors

Upshot of it is that they can't quite seem to get a bearing part number out of the Blueprint system. No amount of shouting and helpful hints seemed to cure this

BTW, what kind of bearing puller were you trying?
I actually have one that looks identical to the SST that MrT calls up in the BGB not a three legged gear puller

Steve, this is the Blueprint rear wheel bearing kit ~£50 iirc?

Image

Have tried a couple of different bearing pullers 2 leg, 3 leg and the flat type ones - think these are the ones illustrated in the BGB?

You will be lucky to get the little tinker off! I managed a couple of times and the last one required a grinder...
