Dunno whats happened to my car guys but today I got in it and the steering wheel was juddering when trying to steer as I was about to pull away. I turned the steering wheel and the squeal noise came.....not good I thought.
I looked at the PS fluid level and that was at Max level for cold........dunno what can be causing it.....
It did it again when i was about to go home from shopping....it squealed, the steering whell juddered then it stopped. I drove away and never heard anything after that.

Anyone got an idea as to the possible cause of this little mishap?
Has my PS pump failed or about to fail? Should I change the PS fluid?

I hope the thermostat housing bolt I lost in the engine bay hasn't got stuck anywhere....it fell into the area under the alternator and between the water pump I think.

Any advise welcome...

Steve, sounds like the power steering belt is alittle loose?

As above, maybe the belt is a little loose, or maybe you spilt a little coolant on it during your recent coolant change? The Toyota Red Stuff is a bit "slippery"

I doubt it. The most likely cause is the belt.

iirc this is not listed under the service schedule for the GT4  It would be wise to change it as with any fluid imho, but I wouldn't be too worried, it can take its place in the queue for everything else to be sorted!

TBH Kris...this is exactly what I thought.
I reckon as I started the car the next morning from cold with the spilt coolant on it, like you say, it would have caused the belt to slip on the pulley a bit.
Hopefully after continuous use it should wear off and stop the little problem.

Cheers again

Steve

The cold also makes belts squeal if they are just a fraction loose

I always run PS (and indeed alternator) belts like this. Mine is just fractionally loose and does the same but on the flipside it's under far less load than a correctly tensioned belt applies

Must have been as myself and Chris suspected with the spilt coolant as it was fine today...even from stone cold....phew...that was a close one...

Cheers guys.

As stevo_st24 said, the cold aggravates things. Mine squeals and judders a bit if you apply lots of lock when reversing out of my driveway on a frosty morning. It was milder today and there was no problem.

damn, i think i may have just found my issue...seems to happen in the cold and when lots of lock applied or complete change of direction - never while driving only from a stop or parking

sounds like i might have to check my belt, and ya ive spilt coolant too but the belts are on the other side of my intercooler fill
