Hello,

I have recently fitted my replacement turbo after a nasty case of snapped shaft (sounds painful :) )

On the new (second hand) turbo there are 5 numbers on the inlet casing (cant remember the numbers) but there are 2 numbers then a hyphon then 3 more numbers????????????? also one of the pipes coming out of the actuator is bigger than my old one.

Anyway she boost up fine until about 0.5 bar then wont go any further and I can hear a hissing noise so obviously it has a boost leak somewhere, however if I turn my boost controller up to 1.12 bar, it will boost up to about 0.97 bar still with the hissing, should it go further with the boost controller on? I didn't think it would as if there is a leak then it will get to a certain pressure then not hold any more? I have checked the pipes and all seem to be on tight, any ideas? I thought that the boost rising with the boost controller was a bit weird because I thought that maybe it could only hold a certain pressure then leaked but this does nto seem to be the case.

I better stop thinking and rambling.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You

Nathan

are you positive you havent been sold a knackered turbo? does it sound like a jet roaring when it comes on boost?

It sounds normal when it boosts until it starts hissing, it was from Scott (SB) so I would hope it is alright :(

Nathan,

Mine makes a whoosh woosh noise on boost, I know that my throttle body to intercooler rubber is split (go anothe on it's way) perhaps yours may be similar?

Check all your hoese, apparently if you put some washing up liquid on them, you can then tell which one is leaking as it will make the washing up liquid bubble?

However I have never tried this, and may be wrong?
If anyone else who wants to comment please do so ;)

Nathan sounds liek a split hose or a jubille clip not done up or unable to hold tight. I have also managed to get an old car to boost higher with a large leak by upping teh EBC pressure. It can be done but it doesn't like it!

From meeting SB I am sure he woudlnt knowingly sell a duff turbo - from what I understand his car & turbo was working fine until the engine ceased :-( If any damage had been done to teh turbo I would suspect it smoke like a blankety blank.

Double check all your connections m8

That is what I was thinking but wanted to make sure, there is no smoke and it boosts up really well until the hissing starts (contradiction there :) ) I will go on a diet and hope my hands shrink to the size of a socket and then I will check all the pipes.

Thanks a lot for your help

Nathan

The other way of checking for leaks is to have the car sat at idle and spray a bit of easy start here and there. If there's a noticable leak it will suck in the stuff and raise the revs a bit. Could help isolate it, but you'd probably want to clean the rest off afterwards :o

Sorted it :)

It was the pipe that goes from the Chargecooler to the inlet manifold  I was checking all the small ones from the actuator getting the hump, couldn't find anything wrong then went to fit the heatshield back on after it took Mr. T 2 weeks to get the right bolts  and found the clip not even tightened up

Thanks for the advice

Nathan
