Post subject:  New clutch

Hi all, I competed in gymkhana over weekend at silverstone and my clutch was stinking. Even after event driving home, once out of car could smell clutch. It feels ok, doesn't slip and got me through many races and the 180 mile drive home, although, I didnt drive hard and was very cautious changing gear.

It has a helix organic, and I've been looking on fensport at the differences between clutches and if I'm going to need a new one what do I go for as the car will only be used in fast road/ track/ autotests?

Any advice appreciated and also if new clutch is needed will anything else be needed to?

If it's not slipping, don't bother changing it - not a quick / easy job.

A clutch which will cope with numerous / frequent 'launches' won't last long, especially if slipped when used on the road.

The amount of time gained on an autotest by doing a 'launch' is minimal and very questionable whether it is worth the cost in clutches, gearboxes and driveshafts that you'll destroy.

Pull away a bit gentler then floor it once the clutch is engaged. It'll cost less than 1/2 second which you'll more than make up by being smoother and more precise round the rest of the course. I've yet to be pipped by just the 5 or so seconds I've lost during a day.

Ok thanks chris. I dont think it was my launches, trying to get the damn thing to slide for a 720° around a barrel did it. Had to keep engauging/disengauging while on and off h-brake as was very tight to try and get round.

Does it still smell?

If it is not slipping, it should be back to normal I would of thought?

It'll smell for a few days but it will probably settle back in with normal driving. Just avoid letting it slip.

I will give it a drive after I've fixed various things. My wheel bearing/hub is absolutley knackd!! The amount of movement from wheel when car is jacked up is mental, and my disc is scoared badley. Also need new abs sensor and rear tyres as mot due in a week or so!!!!
But on a positive note, the car held on: 180 miles to silverstone, a whole day of gymkhana, and the trip back home again. Can't say that many other cars could do that, and I came home with 2nd place trophy!!

Ha, I hit a few barrels and got some dents and scratches but overall did ok and enjoyed it. Need to try and get car sorted before grand final or won't be competing. If I get through i'll have the chance to drive against block but wouldn't want to show him up.....
