My ST205 has been off the road for a little while. When I took it off the road it had a slight creak from the steering rack.

Since getting it back on the road and driving it again, the creak seems louder than it was before.

Has anyone else had this at all?
Any ideas what it could be and how I can fix it?

Cheers!

Make sure the bolts securing this to the subframe are tight...

There are 2 bolts, one each end of the rack in the bottom bolting through the subframe. Access from underneath, above rear of subframe. The bolts are horizontal, heads at the back and semi captive nuts (spike on back goes through hole in subframe) at the front. You can see them if you remove the wheels and look in through the steering arm holes.

I had an awful creaking noise coming from the front right, after taking the wheel off there is one screw on a base plate of the suspension. I tightened this up about half a turn and that cured it.

Are you sure its the rack thats creaking? Identifying the location of noises is notoriously difficult, just as Kris about his wheel bearing saga! Never heard of a problem with the rack before. More likely to be suspension related.

I had a noise from the suspension area... turned out that one of the steering rack bolts wasn't correctly torqued. A cheap suspension fix?!?

looking at the pic that Kris has put up, that is pretty much exactly where the noise is coming from, at the weekend I'll get it somewhere to get it up in the air and have a go!

I'll let you guys know how I get on! Thanks for the help people!

Just out of curiosity, any ideas what the torque figures should be for those two bolts? or is f***ing tight good enough?
